Nashville at Pittsburgh Game Overview

Nashville was able to erase a three-goal deficit in Monday night’s series opener in Pittsburgh only to watch this game end in a 5-3 loss as a +144 underdog. The total went well OVER the closing 5.5 line and it has now gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in five of the Predators last seven games. They are 5-4 on the road in the postseason and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in six of those nine games.

Frederick Gaudreau notched his first goal of these playoffs a little over 13 minutes into the third period of Game 1 to tie the game at three, but the Predators saw their hopes of gaining the early edge in this series disappear a few minutes later with the eventual game winner by the Penguins. The Predators controlled play in this game all night long, but they could not overcome a disastrous start that saw an early PK Stubban goal come off the board followed by Pittsburgh’s three-goal barrage in the final five minutes of the first period to take that early 3-0 lead.

The Penguins are now 3-1 in series openers in this season’s playoffs after pulling out the Game 1 win in this series as -160 favorites. They have gone 8-3 at home in the postseason and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in seven of those contests. Monday’s win was just the second time in Pittsburgh’s last 11 playoff games that it was able to score more than three goals.

The most amazing thing about the Penguins’ victory in the series opener was the fact that they scored four times on Nashville’s Pekka Rinne on just 11 shots on goal. They did not tally a shot on the net in the entire second period and they registered just four in the final period of the night. Nick Bonino gave Pittsburgh the 3-0 lead late in the opening period and he closed out the scoring late in the third with his fourth goal of these playoffs. Goalie Matt Murray turned away 23 of the 26 shots he faced.

Nashville Predators at Pittsburgh Penguins Prediction

I missed the mark in Game 1 with a play on the UNDER and remain amazed with how many goals Pittsburgh tallied against Rinne on so few shots. Nashville controlled the pace of this game and I believe it was a victim of a bad call when that first period goal was disallowed.

Look for the Predators to once again keep the majority of play in Pittsburgh’s end of the ice and this time around their efforts result in a victory that evens this series at a game apiece.
