Tampa Bay at Carolina Game Overview

Tampa Bay started the season with a stunning 31-24 road victory against rival Atlanta as 2.5-point underdogs, but that has been the highlight reel so far with three losses in a row both straight-up and against the spread. The latest setback was a 27-7 beatdown by Denver as a 3.5-point underdog at home. The total stayed UNDER 42.5 points in that game and it also stayed UNDER 49 in an ugly 40-7 road loss to Arizona as a seven-point road underdog in Week 2.

Second-year quarterback Jameis Winston has thrown for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns in four games, but he has also tossed eight interceptions while getting sacked 12 times. Tampa Bay’s running game is averaging just 82.5 yards a game and its defense is ranked 31st in the NFL in points allowed (32.0). This is hardly the direction that Dirk Koetter had in mind when he took over the reins as the Buc’s new head coach.

The Panthers have been a much bigger disappointment at 1-3 both SU and ATS considering that they only lost one regular season game in last year’s run to Super Bowl 50. Things appear to be getting worse from week to week on both sides of the ball and in last Sunday’s division showdown against Atlanta this vaunted defense gave up 48 points in a 15-point loss on the road. The total went way OVER 48.5 points in that game and it has now gone OVER in three of Carolina’s first four games.

To make matters even worse, Cam Newton left last week’s game with a concussion and his playing status for Monday night remains day-to-day. If he cannot go, then look for Derek Anderson to get the start. He completed 17-of-23 passes for 172 yards and two scores in relief of Newton last Sunday. Another big concern for Monday night is a Carolina pass defense that gave up over 500 yards through the air against the Falcons. When it comes to points allowed, this unit is ranked 28th in the league (29.5).

Tampa Bay at Carolina Prediction

The final betting line for both the spread and the total will hinge of Newton’s ability to play, but even if he is under center on Monday night I see the Panthers’ offense still struggling to score points. Carolina’s defense can only play better and it should be able to keep the Bucs in check to make this a low-scoring affair.

If the closing total line would dip lower than 41 points I might rethink this pick, but right now I remain pretty confident that each team will struggle to put more than 20 points on the board making by “best bet” pick for Monday night the UNDER.
