Seattle at Atlanta Game Overview

It was not all that pretty, but Seattle was able to make fairly short work of Detroit in last Saturday’s Wild Card Round with a 26-6 victory at home as an eight-point favorite. The total stayed well UNDER the closing 45.5-point line after going OVER in four of the Seahawks’ previous five games. They will go on the road with a 3-5 record against the spread this season, but they have covered in two games this season as underdogs.

Seattle used its time-tested formula of running the ball on offense and smothering the opponent on defense to pace last week’s win. Thomas Rawls ran the ball 27 times for 161 yards and a score as part of the Seahawks 177 total yards on the ground. Russell Wilson put the ball up 30 times with 23 completions for 224 yards and two scores in the win against Detroit. Credit the defense for shutting down the Lions all night long by holding them to 231 total yards. Seattle’s defense finished the regular season ranked fifth in the NFL in yards allowed and third in scoring with a points-allowed average of 18.3.

The well-rested Falcons cruised to the NFC South Division title this season on the strength of a straight-up four-game winning streak to close out the year. They did fail to cover in their season-ending 38-32 victory against New Orleans as 7.5-point home favorites. With the total going OVER 58.5 points in that game, it has gone OVER in 10 of their last 11 outings and in 14 of 16 games this year. Atlanta is 3-5 ATS at home this season and 5-5 ATS when closing as a favorite.

The formula of scoring the most points of any NFL team this season has appeared to work pretty well for the Falcons. They led the league in scoring with 33.8 points per game and during this current four-game run that average has jumped up to 38.5 points. Matt Ryan was second only to Drew Brees in total passing yards (4,944) and his 38 touchdown throws was also ranked second in the league. Julio Jones has dealt with some nagging injuries down the stretch, but he still ended the year with the second-most receiving yards (1,409) in the NFL.

Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta Falcons Prediction

This NFL Divisional Round matchup comes down to Seattle’s shutdown defense going up against the most potent offensive attack in the league. Atlanta has the advantage with the fast track in front of the home-town crowd, but the Seahawks gain an important edge with their past experience in postseason play.

The line has already moved from 3.5 points to 4.5 points in Atlanta’s favor and that could make all the difference in the world in what I see as a very tight showdown between two of the top teams in the NFC. With the wider spread on the betting board, give me the points and Seahawks in what could easily be a three-point game either way.
