Point Spread: Washington -10.5

San Francisco remained winless after a 26-23 OT loss to Indianapolis last Sunday. Washington had their bye last week.

49ers QB Brian Hoyer had a strong game last week (353 yards, 2 TDs) and has started to find a rhythm in HC Kyle Shanahan’s offense. While WR Pierre Garcon remains his top target, he is spreading the ball around and getting contributions from WR Marquise Goodwin and rookie TE George Kittle. The Redskins’ pass defense has been good in 2017 (225 ypg) but they did have trouble with the Eagles and Chiefs’ passing games. Hoyer has been sacked 15 times on the year and Washington averages 3 sacks per game. The o-line did a better job of pass blocking vs. the Colts and need a repeat performance this Sunday. RB Carlos Hyde is coming off a poor outing and San Francisco needs him to up his game to keep the offense balanced.

The Redskins’ offense has been better-than-expected this season as the running game is producing 130 ypg and QB Kirk Cousins has a 7-1 TD/INT ratio. Washington rotates their RBs so expect rookie Samaje Perine, Chris Thompson and Rob Kelley to all get their opportunities vs. a run defense that surrendered 159 yards on the ground to the Colts. Still, the 49ers run defense has been much better this year and look for them to key on the run on early downs. Cousins lost his top 2 wideouts from 2016 and is making do with an average group of receivers. Thompson leads the team in receiving yardage and is tied for the lead in receptions and TD catches. WR Terrelle Pryor is the No.1 receiver but he and Cousins are still trying to find some chemistry. San Fran’s pass rush has been bolstered by DE Elvis Dumervil (3.5 sacks) and they will look to force Cousins into quick decisions.

In this NFL Week 6 matchup between San Francisco and Washington have the public slightly leaning to the Redskins to cover the 10.5 point spread at home with 53%. The over under bettors are almost split evenly with a slight edge to the over 46.5 with 52% on that side.

San Francisco 49ers at Washington Redskins Week 6 ATS Prediction

While the 49ers are winless, their last 4 losses have been by 3 points or less. Hoyer is playing well and the defense, while young, is much improved from 2016. The Redskins are 2-2 and trying to stay in the hunt for the NFC East title. If Hyde can be a viable threat this week, Hoyer should have opportunities downfield to make some big plays. This is a big number and while the talent edge goes to Washington, I think a hungry, young 49ers team can stay within reach. They are also 3-1 ATS in their last 4 visits to the nation’s capital.
