Philadelphia at Carolina Game Overview

The Eagles opened up some breathing room atop the NFC East with Sunday’s 34-7 romp over Arizona as six-point favorites at home. They moved to 4-1 straight-up on the year with a 3-2 record against the spread. The total stayed UNDER the closing 45-point line in that game after going OVER in their previous three outings. Philadelphia has won two of three games on the road this season both SU and ATS.

Carson Wentz has been effective at moving the ball through the air in his second season as the Eagles’ starting quarterback, but much of this team’s early success this year can be traced back to a ground game that is ranked fifth in the NFL with an average of 138.8 rushing yards per game. Running back Wendell Smallwood sat out Sunday’s games with a knee injury, but Philly still gained 122 yards on the ground behind LeGarrette Blount and Kenjon Barner. Wentz ended the game with 304 yards passing and four touchdown throws while completing 21 of his 30 attempts.

Carolina had to hold off a charging Lions’ offense on Sunday to preserve a 27-24 victory on the road against Detroit as a two-point underdog. The Panthers moved to 4-1 SU (3-1-1 ATS) and into sole possession of the lead in the NFC South with Atlanta off with a bye. They are 1-1 SU at home this season with a 0-1-1 record ATS with a loss to New Orleans and a PUSH in a win against Buffalo. The total has gone OVER the closing line in Carolina’s last three games.

Cam Newton has shaken off a slow start coming off a shoulder injury to throw for six touchdowns against one interception in his last two games after tossing just two touchdowns and four interceptions in his first three starts this year. The Panthers are averaging 21 points per game and their offense is ranked 18th in the NFL in total yards. On the other side of the ball, their defense is fifth in the league against the pass and ranked third in total yards allowed.

The Panthers have gone a costly 1-5 ATS in their last six home games and they are 2-6 ATS in their last eight Thursday games. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in six of their last seven home games against a team with a SU winning record on the road.

Philadelphia Eagles at Carolina Panthers Week 7 NCAAF Prediction

Despite each team’s early success, this Thursday night’s contest a big test for both in their quest to be considered a legitimate contender in the NFC this season. While the betting spread for this game is razor sharp at three points for the home team in a very tight matchup, I believe the total line at 45.5 points is a bit soft given the way that both of these quarterbacks have been throwing touchdowns lately. This sets the stage for a play on the OVER for Thursday night.
