New York was 5-4 last season before going 1-6 in their last seven games to finish 6-10. Dallas was 2-0 in 2015 before losing QB Tony Romo. They won only 2 more games to finish 4-12.

The Giants ranked 8th in offense last year and 7th in passing as QB Eli Manning had one of his better seasons. The addition of rookie WR Sterling Shepard and the hopeful return to health of WR Victor Cruz should only help the passing game. The Cowboys finished 7th against the pass in ’15 but will be without their starting DEs at the beginning of the season. Randy Gregory and DeMarcus Lawrence are both suspended for the first 4 games and even highly-respected DC Rod Marinelli will have a hard time generating a consistent pass rush. NY isn’t a ground-and-pound offense but they get by. They abandoned their RB-by-committee late last year and had success. RB Rashad Jennings isn’t a bell-cow but he averaged 4.4 ypc in 2015. The Cowboys ranked 22nd in run defense last season.

Dallas enters 2016 without Romo as he is out with a back injury. That means rookie 5th-rounder QB Dak Prescott will be under center. He had an electric preseason (5-0 TD/INT ratio) but will be facing 1st-stringers on an every-week basis from now on. He has the tools but he will also face several different looks. New York ranked 32nd in defense last year but added several players in FA. DC Steve Spagnuolo had great success in his first tenure with the Giants and has better personnel this year to work with. He’ll have to focus on RB Ezekiel Elliott as the rookie figures to see a lot of work behind one of the league’s top o-lines. He’s a complete back and will be one of the top two weapons along with WR Dez Bryant. Prescott also looked good in preseason when he ran with the ball so look for the Giants to try and stop the run first and make Prescott beat them with his arm.

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys Free Pick

The Giants know they can score points but can they stop anybody? They get a break this week as Prescott doesn’t figure to be as dynamic as he was in the preseason and Spagnuolo should be able to confuse him with multiple looks. The return of DE Jason Pierre-Paul and addition of DE Olivier Vernon should spark the pass rush and I see NY eking out a victory behind Manning and their improved defense.
