New Orleans at Carolina Game Overview

The Saints moved to 11-2 straight-up and 10-3 against the spread with last Sunday’s 28-14 victory against Tampa Bay as 9.5-point road favorites to clinch the NFC South for the second year in a row. New Orleans needed a tiebreak to get the nod over Carolina in last year’s division title run, but this time around it is gunning for the top seed in the NFC. The Saints come into this game with a 6-1 record ATS in their first seven road games this year.

While the drama in this matchup has been dialed down quite a bit considering the current gap between these two division foes, the Saints still need a win to hold onto that top playoff seed over the 11-2 Los Angeles Rams. Drew Brees remains one of the favorites to win MVP honors, but he has not played the part his past two starts in a bad loss to Dallas and in Sunday’s win against the Bucs. This should add some sense of urgency to get this high-powered offense back into top form heading into the postseason.

At one point this season, the Panthers were just one game in back of New Orleans at 6-2 SU (5-3 ATS) through the first half of the schedule. That gap has grown considerably in the midst of a five-game losing streak (SU and ATS). With the exception of a 31-point blowout loss against Pittsburgh to start this current slide, Carolina has lost the other four games by a combined 17 points with the total staying UNDER in three of those games. Four of the five losses were on the road. The Panthers are 5-1 SU at home this season while covering in four of the six games.

With a return trip to the NFC playoffs on life support, Carolina is going to need a big effort from Cam Newton on Monday night. His overall stats do not look all that bad with 3,264 yards passing, and 24 touchdown throws. He also has another 473 yards and four scores running the ball as the team's second-leading rusher behind Christian McCaffrey's 926 yards on the ground. The problem is the "simple fact" that the Panthers have forgotten how to win. Blown leads late in the game, costly turnovers and bad penalties continue to plague this team on a weekly basis.

New Orleans at Carolina Prediction 12/17/2018

The Saints are one of the top teams in the NFL this season when playing to form. However, Carolina can still be a big thorn in their side in this home-and-home series over the next three weeks.

New Orleans has been an excellent road team all year long, but there has to be some concern with covering six points on the road against a very desperate division foe. I will take those six points and Carolina ATS on Monday night.
