Point Spread: Steelers -7

Minnesota defeated New Orleans 29-19 on Monday night. Pittsburgh held on to beat Cleveland 21-18 on Sunday.

The Vikings got a great performance from rookie RB Dalvin Cook last week (22-127) and will lean on him in this matchup. The Steelers held the Browns to 57 yards on 25 carries and will certainly key on the rookie. However, their pass defense is still a work in progress and QB Sam Bradford was razor sharp in the win against the Saints (27-32 for 346 yards). That’s an 84% completion rate and he set the NFL record in 2016 with a 71.5% rate. WRs Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs don’t have huge reps but combined for 16-250-2 against New Orleans and TE Kyle Rudolph is a reliable target as well. NO gave up 1 sack last week while Pittsburgh notched 7 sacks against the Browns. This will be the key to the game: Can the Vikings rebuilt o-line give Bradford time to find his receivers and open holes for Cook.

The Steelers couldn’t get their ground game going last week (17-35) as RB Le’Veon Bell continues to try to get into game shape. He’s a huge part of the offense both on the ground and through the air. The Vikings have to key on Bell and try to make the Steelers one dimensional. WR Antonio Brown had a monster game last week (11-182) but he was the only wideout to produce. QB Ben Roethlisberger will look to spread it around but tends to lock in on Brown in crucial situations. Minnesota has a good secondary and expect them to shade their coverage toward Brown and take their chances with the other receivers. While the Vikings had only 1 sack last Monday, they put considerable pressure on QB Drew Brees.

Minnesota Vikings at Pittsburgh Steeler Week 2 Prediction

This game features 2 teams hoping to win their divisions this year. The Vikings looked good last week while Pittsburgh struggled with a team starting a rookie QB, also a team they usually dominate. I figure this will be a close game as both teams will look to establish their ground games early rather than fling it around 50 times. If Minnesota’s o-line can duplicate their performance from last week, they have an excellent chance to stay in the game and possibly win it. I’ll take the visitor this week to get a big road cover.
