Betting Odds

Point Spread: New York Jets -2
Total: 39.5

Los Angeles fell 13-10 to Carolina last week. New York dropped a 27-23 decision to Miami last Sunday.

Rams QB Case Keenum will start this game despite the home fans chanting “We want Goff” last week. He has a 9-11 TD/INT ratio and while he has racked up the passing yards (2,004), untimely interceptions have been his and the offense’s undoing. Over the past 5 games (4 losses), LA has averaged 17 ppg. The Rams lack a go-to receiver so they are dependent on players like WRs Kenny Britt and Brian Quick to make plays. The Jets were allowing 290 passing ypg before holding Miami to only 137 last week. Despite the presence of RB Todd Gurley, Los Angeles is averaging barely more than 100 yards per game on the ground. The Jets have been very good against the run for most of the season although they did surrender 137 yards last week. Look for New York to try to contain Gurley and force Keenum to throw 40+ passes. The Jets have mustered only 15 sacks on the year and need to do a better job of pressuring the QB in this contest.

New York ran for 140 yards last week on 21 carries and should have run the ball more. RB Matt Forte can still be a workhorse and look for him to get more carries this week. The Rams have played decent run defense throughout the year but I see NY working hard to establish the run in this matchup. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a TD pass last week but also tossed 2 more picks (13 on the year). He has been forcing the action with bad results. WRs Brandon Marshall and Quincy Enunwa combined for 7 catches and 70 yards last week in the loss to the Dolphins. That lack of production won’t get it done this week and I expect both players to have better games against LA. Forte and RB Bilal Powell are also good receivers and will give the Rams LBs some trouble. Fitzpatrick has been sacked 17 times as the o-line has done a decent job of protecting him. While the Rams had 5 sacks last week, like the Jets, they only have 15 on the year led by DT Aaron Donald’s 5.

Public Money Consensus

Although the oddsmakers don’t know who will be starting for the Jets against the Rams on Sunday, the public is nearly split on the point spread of the Jets -2 at 54/46% respectively. The Over seems to the the play in this matchup with 68% believing this game will go over the 39.5 point total.

Los Angeles Rams at New York Jets Prediction

This is a game between 2 bad teams that have each won only 3 games. The Rams can’t score and the Jets once solid defense has had issues. Without a top wideout or marquee QB to worry about, I see the New York defense responding in a big way this week. If they can contain Gurley, they will put the game in Keenum’s hands. Los Angeles has lost 4 straight games in part due to Keenum’s TO issues. Forte still has a lot left and I expect him to get 25+ touches in this contest and for Marshall and/or Enunwa to have a big game. This will be the Rams 3rd cross country trip of the year and after a 3-0 start, they are fading fast.
