The Chiefs opened their preseason schedule with a 27-17 loss versus the lowly 49ers, but many of their top two strings played well. Kansas City took a 17-9 lead into the 4th before the third and fourth level backups were outscored 18-0 in the final quarter. In their second game, the Chiefs looked strong throughout taking the lead in the 2nd and never looking back. They got strong play from their running backs with first string RB leading the way with 113 yards on just 7 carries! All quarterbacks threw a TD pass with the top two starting QB Alex Smith and rookie QB Patrick Mahomes completing a combined 18 of 23 for 169 yards and three touchdowns with zero picks.

The Seahawks roared out of the gate with a 48-17 slaughter of the Chargers. Seattle looked good in the game, but the margin of victory was inflated by some sloppy play by QB Kellen Clemens who threw two costly interceptions in the 2nd quarter. QB Trevone Boykin looked good in the game throwing for 189 yards on 12 of 15 passing. Week 2 of the preseason resulted in a decent game all around with QB Russell Wilson getting the lion’s share of the snaps and was in regular season form completing 13 of 18 attempts for 206 yards with two touchdown passes. The running game was impressive amassing 153 yards on 34 carries. Defensively, they were strong in the running game holding the Rams to a mediocre 71 yards on 17 carries, but the secondary was only adequate allowing 249 yards on 25 catches over 38 attempts.

Game Motivation

The Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid appeared to not put much importance into winning these practice games going 13 and 20 in his first 8 seasons as a head coach, but that appears to have changed. In the last seven seasons including this year he has gone 17-9. Pete Carroll is another head coach that likes to win these games going 20-10 in his NFL head coaching career. The Seahawks record has been exceptional in these games over the last six preseasons with a won/loss record of 17-5.

Public Money Consensus

The point spread action shows a trend to the home squad with a hair under 60% being placed on Seattle minus the points. The total line wagering shows a public lean to the UNDER with 54% landing on that side of the O/U line.

Kansas City Chiefs at Seattle Seahawks Week 3 (Preseason) Prediction

Normally in the Seahawks preseason games there is an obvious edge in the motivation of the head coaches, but in my opinion, that isn’t the case here. The Chiefs have the edge in talent depth at most of the key offensive positions. You could argue that with Russell Wilson the Hawks have the stronger QB play, but the one-two punch of Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes has looked better than the Russell/Boykin tandem. Add in the fact that not only did Seattle lose their starting LT George Fant, they don’t have anyone on paper that looks ready to take over his spot. I expect with the protection issues that HC Pete Carroll will limit Russell’s game time and if that happens the wrong team is favored here.
