Week 3 of the NFL season gets underway with a bang when the Houston Texans and the New England Patriots square off at Gillette Stadium in front of a prime time crowd on Thursday Night Football. The game is set to get underway at 8:25 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on CBS.

The Texans are setting the early pace in the AFC South with a 2-0 start both straight-up and against the spread. After getting past Chicago 23-14 in Week 1 as 4.5-point home favorites, they beat Kansas City 19-12 at home this past Sunday in a game that closed as a PICK. The total has stayed UNDER in both of those games and it has stayed UNDER in their last four games following a SU win.

Defense and a solid running game have led the way for the Texans in their first two games. They are ranked third in the league against the pass and they also come in third in both points and total yards allowed. New starting quarterback Brock Osweiler has thrown for 499 yards and three touchdowns so far, but the offense has been paced by Lamar Miller on the ground with 189 yards on 53 carries. Will Fuller has been an early force in the passing game with nine receptions for 211 yards.

Betting odds on BetOnline futures board did not favor the Patriots going a perfect 4-0 without starting quarterback Tom Brady in the lineup, but they are halfway there with victories both SU and ATS against Arizona as heavy 9.5-point road underdogs and against Miami at home in Week 2 as six-point favorites. The total ended as a PUSH against the Cardinals on a betting line of 44 and it went OVER the 42-point closing line in a 31-24 win against Miami.

We know that Brady still has two games left of his four-game league suspension, but the big question mark for Thursday night is the throwing shoulder of his backup Jimmy Garoppolo. Not to say that there is going to be a quarterback controversy in New England, but he has looked pretty sharp in his first two starts with 498 yards passing and four touchdown throws. If Garoppolo cannot go, then look for third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett to get the call. In a relief role against the Dolphins, he completed 6-of-9 passes for 92 yards. Patriots’ fans are hoping to get their first look at tight end Rob Gronkowski in action on Thursday night after sitting out the first two games with a sore hamstring.

Houston at New England Prediction

Both teams come in hot off a fast start and while you would think that this game would be the early stumbling block without Brady, New England appears to be a team possessed in its mission to win these first four games to prove a point to the entire league.

It is not all that often that you can get New England and a few points in a game at Gillette Stadium, so I am jumping on the opportunity with a “best bet” pick that the Patriots move to 3-0 behind whichever quarterback is calling the plays.
