Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh Game Overview

The Hokies made some noise this past week to climb back into the national rankings with a 27-16 victory against Miami (FL) as 4.5-point home favorites. They are now 5-2 on the year straight-up with a 4-3 record against the spread. The total went OVER 52.5 points in Saturday’s win and it has gone OVER in four of their last six games. Virginia Tech heads to Pitt with a SU 4-2 record in its last six road games.

One of the main reasons for the Hokies’ success this season has been a balanced offensive attack that is averaging 436 total yards and 35.6 points a game. Quarterback Jerod Evans has thrown for 1,611 yards and 19 touchdowns and Travon McMillian has led the ground game with 458 rushing yards and three scores. Another big reason for the solid start is a Virginia Tech defense that is holding opponents to an average of just 17.9 points a game.

Pittsburgh remains right in the mix in the ACC’s jumbled Coastal Division race with last week’s 45-31 win on the road against Virginia as a three-point favorite. The Panthers are 2-1 in ACC play as part of a SU record of 5-2 on the year. They have failed to cover ATS in five of their first seven games and the total has gone OVER in their last six contests. Pitt has failed to cover in its last five home games.

The Panthers are averaging 38.4 points a game on the strength of its ability to run the ball. They are ranked 20th in the nation in average rushing yards (239.1) behind a number of solid backs. James Conner has led the way with 531 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on 124 carries, but there are a total of four different players with at least 100 yards on the ground this year. Pittsburgh’s defense has been less reliable with an average of 31.4 points allowed.

Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh Prediction

This should be a great battle right from the opening kickoff between two closely matched teams. Each one needs a win to stay on pace for a spot in the ACC Championship, but I would have to lean towards Pitt playing at home.

The current 4.5 betting spread appears to be a bit too generous for a road favorite playing a closely matched conference opponent in what I see to be a three-point game either way. The Hokies might get the SU win, but I betting that the Panthers make them earn it.
