This Saturday afternoon in South Bend, the Virginia Tech Hokies will try and bounce back from a bad conference loss when they go outside the ACC to play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Game time from Notre Dame Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on NBC.

Virginia Tech at Notre Dame Game Overview

It has been quite the ride for the Hokies so far under new head coach Justin Fuente. They are 5-2 straight-up in conference play, but a stunning 30-20 loss to Georgia Tech this past Saturday as 14-point home favorites put a slight kink in their Coastal Division title plans. Virginia Tech is 7-3 overall, but just 4-6 against the spread. The total stayed UNDER the closing 55.5-point line in last week’s loss and it has stayed UNDER in four of its last six games.

The Hokies spotted the Yellow Jackets a 20-point lead at halftime and could never close the gap. Quarterback Jerod Evans completed 32-of-45 attempts for 316 yards and a score, but he was also picked off twice to go along with five sacks and a costly fumble. The defense had no answer for Georgia Tech backup quarterback Matthew Jordan, who racked up 121 yards and two scores on the ground. Virginia Tech is a much better team than what we saw last week, but this kind of performances does creep into the mix from time to time.

Notre Dame is still trying to turn its season around following a dreadful 2-5 start both SU and ATS. It has now won two of its last three games with this past Saturday’s 44-6 romp against Army as a 14-point favorite at home. The 4-6 Irish have a tough road ahead to get back to .500 on the year with a season-ending matchup against USC, but they have to be encouraged by their recent play. The total stayed UNDER 54 in last week’s win and it has stayed UNDER in their last five games.

Quarterback DeShone Kizer has led a passing game that is averaging a respectable 254.8 yards a game and running back Josh Adams has anchored a ground game that is averaging 160.6 yards a game. The Irish as a whole are scoring 30.9 points a game, but it has had their fair share of issues with a defense that has been very inconsistent at times.

Virginia Tech Hokies at Notre Dame Fighting Irish Prediction

Neither team has been favorites of the betting public this season with losing records ATS. It is this kind of inconsistency from week to week that makes either team tough to bet on. The one constant over the past few weeks has been lower than expected scoring in relation to the closing total line.

I am banking on that trend carrying over in the first-ever meeting between these two teams with a “best bet” play on the UNDER 55.
