Virginia Tech vs. Clemson Game Overview

The Hokies were able to lock up the ACC Coastal Division title with this past Saturday’s 52-10 romp over rival Virginia as 19.5-point home favorites. This raised their record to 6-2 straight-up in conference play as part of an overall record of 9-3. Virginia Tech is an even 6-6 against the spread and the total has gone OVER in four of its last six games. It is 1-1 this season ATS when closing as an underdog.

First year head coach Justin Fuente was recently named ACC Coach of the Year in one of the program’s best efforts in years. The offense is led by junior quarterback Jerod Evans. He comes into this game with 3,045 yards passing and 26 touchdown throws against just five interceptions. He also leads the team in rushing with 713 yards and eight scores on 161 carries. The Hokies are averaging 34.3 points a game while holding opposing teams to 21.1 points on the other side of the ball.

Clemson was the odds-on favorite to win another ACC title heading into this season and for the most part it has been able to live up to those lofty expectations. The Tigers’ lone loss of the season was a tight 43-42 setback to Pittsburgh on Nov. 12 as heavy 21.5-point home favorites. They survived more than a few close calls with an even 6-6 record ATS and the total has gone OVER in six of their last eight games.

Deshaun Watson continues to set the pace for Clemson on offense as one of the top college football players in the nation. As a duel threat under center, he has 3,626 passing yards and 34 scoring strikes complementing another 444 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Wayne Gallman led the Tigers in rushing with 943 yards on 179 carries and he made his way into the end zone 14 times on the ground. Mike Williams racked up 1,114 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns on 79 receptions as Watson’s favorite target and it all added up to a scoring average of 40 points a game.

Virginia Tech Hokies at Clemson Tigers Prediction

I have been impressed with the consistent play of Virginia Tech this season under the new regime. The Hokies may not have the same level of overall talent that Clemson has, but they have enough playmakers to make this game interesting.

I went against Clemson last week in a lopsided rout of rival South Carolina and paid the price, but I still think it will have its hands full this Saturday night in Orlando. The Tigers hang on to win, but the final score will be closer than the current 10-point spread.
