Old Dominion has been powered by a prolific running back in Ray Lawry who has become the leading rusher in school history. Ray had a nominal day at the office against the Great Danes as he would rush for just 44 yards and one touchdown on five attempts. There is a good chance ODU was preserving him for the bulk of their schedule as Albany was scheduled to be a tune-up outing before the Monarchs sink their teeth into FBS play. Nevertheless, the Monarchs appeared sloppy in their opener as they turned the ball over three times.

UMass has had a very tumultuous beginning to their season. The Minutemen would open with a heartbreaking loss against Hawaii in Hadley two weeks ago to follow it up with a thrashing sustained by FBS newcomer Coastal Carolina over the weekend. With Massachusetts dropping their first two contests out of the chute, it appears that this season maybe another chaotic campaign marred by underachievement. The two teams featured in this bout met in 2016 where Old Dominion would host Massachusetts at home and demolish them by a score of 36-16. The number next to Old Dominion is no mistake as it is without question their recent successes has been taken into account. The fact remains though Old Dominion won by two touchdowns against Albany, statistically they were actually outplayed. Whether this is shaking off pre-season rust or taking an opponent lightly is yet to be determined. The fact remains that UMass is hungry for a win and looking to get off the snide. The Minutemen have produced let-downs as a favorite but now they come in as a home dog, a much more favorable position. What this creates is a buy-low and sell-high situation on both teams and we will go ahead and take advantage while we can.
