North Carolina vs. Florida State Game Overview

The Tar Heels opened their season with a 33-24 loss to Georgia as 3.5-point underdogs, but they have been perfect ever since in victories against Illinois, James Madison and Pittsburgh in last week’s ACC opener. North Carolina beat the Panthers 37-36, but it could not cover against the spread as a 6.5-point favorite at home. The total went OVER 67 in that game and it has now gone OVER in its last three games.

Junior quarterback Mitch Trubisky has been grabbing some early headlines with 1,306 yards passing and 10 touchdown throws against zero interceptions. He has completed an impressive 74.5 percent of his first 137 passing attempts. Ryan Switzer has been his favorite target with 33 receptions for 429 yards and two scores, while Elijah Hood leads the Tar Heels’ ground game with 291 yards rushing and four touchdown runs on 54 attempts. Overall, this offense is averaging 41.3 points a game.

Florida State caught everyone’s attention right out of the gate with a 45-34 victory against Ole Miss as a 4.5-point favorite, but a stunning 63-20 loss to Louisville as one-point road favorites in the their ACC opener sent the Seminoles tumbling in the national rankings. They bounced back last week with a 55-35 victory against South Florida as five-point road favorites to improve to 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS. The total has gone OVER in all three games with a posted betting line.

Balance has been the key to Florida State’s success on offense this season. Behind freshman quarterback Deondre Francois, it is averaging 242.5 passing yards a game and with Heisman hopeful Dalvin Cook running the ball this unit is posting 244.8 yards a game on the ground. The Seminoles are tied for 16th in the nation in scoring with 43.0 points a game, but there has to be some concern with a defense that is allowing an average of 35 points to its opponents.

North Carolina at Florida State Prediction

The Tar Heels started the season nationally ranked and I still think they are one of the top 25 teams in the nation. Florida State also knows how to put points on the board, but its defense is going to be its Achilles heel to making a serious run back to the top of the rankings after climbing all the way to No. 2 before the loss to Louisville.

I am taking the 11 points on BetOnline’s current board and taking North Carolina to cover on the road. This one should be a barnburner that goes right down to the final possession.
