NC State vs. South Carolina Game Overview

The Wolfpack started last season strong with a 4-1 run out of the gate both straight-up and against the spread before getting mired in a SU four-game losing streak. They rebounded down the stretch with three victories in their last four games both SU and ATS to finish the year 7-6 SU with a 9-4 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER in seven of their final nine games.

NC State finished fourth in the ACC’s Atlantic Division last season with a SU conference record of 3-5 and the recently updated futures odds at BetOnline paint a similar picture as a +1400 fourth-favorite to win the division this season. The Wolfpack have Ryan Finley back at quarterback after throwing for 3,055 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, but they will have to find a way to replace their leading running back Matthew Dayes. Defensively, NC State returns eight starters from last year’s unit that was ranked 24th in the nation in yards allowed.

The Gamecocks went 3-5 SU in conference play to finish fifth in the SEC’s East Division last season. This was part of an overall record of 6-7 (both SU and ATS) that included a 46-39 loss to South Florida in the Birmingham Bowl as 10.5-point underdogs. The total went OVER in South Carolina’s last three games in 2016 behind a very porous defense after staying UNDER in eight of its first 10 games.

Look for quarterback Jake Bentley to get the start this Saturday after posting a solid performance over the second half of last season. He will have a full complement of targets to throw to including Rico Dowdle as his leading receiver and, with four starters returning up front, this Gamecocks’ offense remains basically intact for last year’s version. There are far more holes to fill on a defense that was gouged for over 400 yards per game.

NC State Wolfpack vs. South Carolina Gamecocks Week 1 Prediction

I like NC State as a five-point favorite in this matchup playing in its home state. The Wolfpack appear to have a few more weapons on offense and I would give them an even bigger edge on the other side of the ball given the way that South Carolina’s defense completely collapsed down the stretch last season. Both teams should be able to put up some points in this one, but my ‘best bet’ pick is that NC State widens the gap at the end by more than five points.
