A pair of ACC teams coming off a bad loss square off against one another this Thursday night when the Miami Hurricanes go on the road to play the Virginia Tech Hokies. Game time from Lane Stadium is set for 7 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Miami at Virginia Tech Game Overview

Miami fell from the national rankings this week following Saturday’s 20-13 loss to North Carolina as a six-point home favorite. This was on the heels of a 20-19 setback against Florida State as a slight 1.5-point favorite at home. The Hurricanes are now 4-2 straight-up on the year with a 1-2 record in ACC play. They are also 4-2 against the spread and the total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five games.

This sudden downturn in offensive production followed a scoring average of 47 points through Miami’s first four games against much weaker competition. In last week’s loss to the Tar Heels, quarterback Brad Kaaya completed just 51.6 percent of his 31 passing attempts for 224 yards. Miami was able to gain 139 yards on the ground but it could not find the end zone with just one rushing touchdown on the day. The Hurricanes’ defense is still playing at a high level with an average of just 14 points allowed.

Virginia Tech is another ACC team that is no longer nationally ranked with this past Saturday’s stunning 31-17 loss to Syracuse as a heavy 23-point favorite on the road. This was the Hokies’ second SU loss of the year against four wins and they are 3-3 ATS. The total stayed UNDER 65.5 points in last week’s loss after going OVER in three of their previous four outings. The total has now stayed UNDER in 10 of Virginia Tech’s last 15 games.

The 17 points against the Orange was the first time this year that the Hokies did not post at least 24 points in a game. Their scoring average on the season is still a healthy 35.3 points a game, but that number was also built up against inferior competition. This is another team that relies heavily on its defense to win games and despite the mini-meltdown against Syracuse this unit is still ranked 15th in the nation in points allowed (18.2).

Miami at Virginia Tech Prediction

Both of these teams are probably not good enough to be considered Top 25 programs, but they come into this game evenly matched. The slight edge should go to Virginia Tech playing at home, but it is hard to say how each of these offenses will respond to a poor showing in last week’s loss.

What I am looking for is another strong effort on defense from both the Hurricanes and the Hokies to help keep this game UNDER the current 51-point total line at BetOnline.
