Memphis at Central Florida Game Overview

Memphis will have to try and win the AAC title on the road in light of its lone setback on the year against Central Florida in its conference opener. The Tigers were mauled by the Knights 40-13 as 5.5-point road underdogs on Sept. 30 before reeling-off seven straight-up victories in a row. They went a profitable 6-1 against the spread in the same span as part of an overall record of 7-4 ATS. The total went OVER in eight of 11 games this year.

To get past UCF this time around, Memphis will need another big effort from senior quarterback Riley Ferguson. In Saturday’s season-ending 70-13 romp over East Carolina, he only needed nine completions to rack up 299 yards passing and three scores. On the year, he has thrown for 3,500 yards and 32 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. The Tigers are ranked ninth in the nation in passing yards and their 44.3-point scoring average is ranked fourth.

Central Florida could make a case for a spot in the College Football Playoff with a win on Saturday as just one of two undefeated teams in Division IA heading into this game. The Knights were clearly the most dominant team in the AAC this season with a point differential of plus 284. They were 6-4-1 ATS with the total going OVER in seven of the 11 games. Friday’s thrilling 49-42 victory against rival South Florida as a 10-point home favorite was the fourth time in UCF’s last five games that it failed to cover a double-digit spread.

This is another offense that was able to move the ball through the air behind sophomore quarterback McKenzie Milton. He completed 69.1 percent of his 320 passing attempts for 3,301 yards and 30 touchdowns while only getting picked off six times. The Knights also did a good job at moving the ball on the ground with an average of 198.4 rushing yards a game. While the offense averaged even more points a game (47.6) than Memphis as the highest scoring team in the nation, the Knights’ defense was pretty stout allowing just 22.5 points per game.

Memphis at Central Florida Prediction

Both of these teams belong in this game given the way they each dominated play in the AAC this season. You can also heavily discount the result of that first meeting given each team’s current form coming into Saturday’s showdown in Orlando. The Oddsmakers are obviously baiting the betting public with the inflated 85.5-point total line, but both teams are more than capable of taking this game OVER that betting line.

I am going with Memphis and the seven points as my ‘best bet’ pick in a game that could easily come down to which team has the ball last.
