It's rare for a Group of 5 program to host a Power 5 outfit, but Sun Belt power Coastal Carolina gets that chance when it hosts Big 12 Kansas in Conway, SC, Friday night. The Chanticleers are coming off an 11-1 season of a year ago, including a victory over these Jayhawks in Lawrence. Kansas, meanwhile, remains in rebuilding mode, now under its fifth head coach over the last ten seasons.

When was the last time a Sun Belt team was favored by three and a half touchdowns over a Big 5 team? Probably never. But that’s the betting situation we’re got here. How are we playing this game with our <a class="advblue" href="https://www.sportsbettingstats.com/ncaaf/free-ncaaf-picks" title="Free NCAA Football Picks ATS">free NCAAF pick?

Kansas-CCU Betting Odds

Week 2's college football betting lines opened Coastal Carolina at -27 over Kansas, with an over/under of around 53. Early betting action brought that spread down to -25 and dipped that total to 52, but public money has driven line back up to -26.5 on most <a class="advblue" href="https://www.sportsbettingstats.com/ncaaf/odds" title="Compare NCAAF Betting Odds from Multiple Sportsbooks">oddsboards.

Any bettors out there who think the Jayhawks might win this game outright could get upwards +1700 on the college football money line, which doesn't seem like enough for a game with a 25-point spread.

Kansas-Coastal Carolina College Football Betting Preview

The Jayhawks opened their 2021 season and the Coach Leipold era with a 17-14 come-from-behind victory over FCS South Dakota last week. Kansas started very slowly but scored late in the first half to lead 7-0 into the locker room. The Jayhawks then scored the first three second-half points but fell behind 14-10 with five minutes to go. KU then drove 64 yards (with a bit of help from a targeting penalty) to re-take the lead with a minute left and hung on from there. However, the Jayhawks couldn't cover the spread as 11-point favorites.

Kansas got out-gained by the Coyotes 263-245 and out-rushed 165-82. The Jayhawks just made a couple of plays more than South Dakota.

Kansas returned 16 starters, eight on each side of the ball, from a team that played 0-9 last season. But Coach Leipold knows how to win; he led Wisconsin-Whitewater to six D-3 national titles and took Buffalo from 2-10 in 2016 to 6-1 and a No. 25 ranking last season!

The Chanticleers, meanwhile, opened their season last week with an easy 52-14 win over The Citadel. Coastal Carolina drove its first four possessions of the game to touchdowns and led 31-0 at the half. Near the end, with the game in hand but the point spread up for grabs, CCU tacked on one last touchdown with two minutes left to secure the cover as a 32-point favorite.

Coastal Carolina out-gained the Bulldogs 610-237.

CCU returned 19 starters, nine on offense and ten on defense, from a team that played 11-1 last season. So the Chanticleers should be right in the running for that Group of 5 New Year's Day slot.

Kansas-Coastal Carolina Recent History

These teams have met each of the last two seasons in Lawrence, a pair of Coastal Carolina victories. Two years ago, the Chanticleers beat Kansas 12-7 as seven-point underdogs, then the previous year CCU beat the Jayhawks 38-23 as a six-point dog.

Coastal Carolina scored the first 28 points of the game last year and let Kansas get within 28-17 but hung on from there.

Also, that game played over a total of 55, even though the teams only combined for 685 yards of total offense.

Kansas at Coastal Carolina Prediction 9/10/21

Coastal Carolina thinks it's got a shot at playing on New Year's Day, and a win over a Power 5 outfit, even Kansas, looks good on the resume. But 25 points is a lot for a Sun Belt team against a Big 12 school. Also, Coach Leipold has an excellent track record; the Jayhawks will be better with him. In fact, they're already better than they were last year when they only lost to CCU by 15. Kansas probably won't pull an upset here, but we'll show some faith in the new coach and take the Jayhawks plus the points.
