Iowa opened as a 3-point favorite with a total of 40, but as of Tuesday morning the Hawkeyes have been bet up to -6 on most betting boards. The O/U has also seen some movement with a consensus line of 42.5 at the sportsbook posted a total.

Last Games: Iowa fell to 3-1 suffering their first loss of the season losing at home to a ranked Wisconsin team 28-17 where they failed to cover the spread as a 3-point underdog and the total went Over. Minnesota also fell to 3-1 and losing their first game of the season with their 42-13 beat down in Maryland. In comes as no surprise that they didn’t get the spread falling well short of the +2.5 spread.

Iowa at Minnesota NCAAF Set-Up

As mentioned, both squads are coming off their first defeats of the season, and each is 0-1 in Big 10 play. Iowa is the road favorite in this game and will look to extend their win streak over Minnesota to four games. The last two matches in this series have been defensive battles with the Hawkeyes winning at home 17-10 last season and 14-7 in 2016. Speaking of defense that continues to be the strength of the Iowa team having not allowed more than 17 points in any game this season.

While Iowa has a balanced team on the offensive side of the football they are not a dynamic offense ranking tied for 97th in the nation in PPG.

Minnesota lost badly in their last game to Maryland where they were out-gained 432 yards to 263 yards. The big difference was in the rushing with the Gophers recording 94 yards compared to the 315 allowed by their defense. Minnesota was also sloppy with the ball committing three turnovers while not forcing any to finish -3 in net turnovers.

In Iowa's loss to Wisconsin in their last game, it was close until the fourth where they were outscored 14-0 outscored did not help their cause with a minus three turnover number.

Both teams will look to establish the run in this game, and Iowa ranks 4th in the nation defending the run and Minnesota, who were torched on the ground in the loss to Maryland, ranks 48th. Bryce Williams leads the Golden Gophers with 283 rushing yards, but only rushed for 24 yards in the loss to Maryland and is only averaging 3.8 yards per carry.

Head to Head: Last season at Iowa the Hawkeyes beat the Golden Gophers 17-10. When they faced each other last in Minnesota in 2016, the Hawkeyes beat the Golden Gophers 14-7 as stated above.

Iowa Hawkeyes (3-1 SU 3-1 ATS 2-2 O/U) vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers (3-1 SU 3-1 ATS 2-2 O/U)

On the season Iowa ranks 82nd in the nation in total offense, and 3rd in total defense and Minnesota ranks 109th in total offense and 14th in total defense.

Iowa at Minnesota Prediction 10/2/18

Look this line opened at Iowa -3 and was quickly bet up to -6, and in this case, I think the steam may be correct. The Hawkeyes racked up 404 yards against the Badgers which was nearly 100 yards greater than they had allowed in a game this season. They rushed for 148 yards against Wisconsin surpassing the 100 yard mark for the fourth time this season. I don’t expect Iowa to have a problem running this week against a Minnesota team that was ripped for 315 yards on the ground last week by Maryland. The Gopher’s ability to run the ball will decide this game. Minnesota did have three consecutive games with over 100 yards rushing before last week’s 94, but what is a concern is the yards per carry. Excluding their opener against NMSU, they have been held to 2.9 yards or less per carry and now face Iowa’s top stop unit that did allow 210 to Wisconsin but held it’s first three to 126 yards on 82 attempts!
