Clemson at Georgia Tech Game Overview

<p>
Despite the perfect 3-0 start by a combined score of 108-37, Clemson is just the second-best team in the ACC behind upstart Louisville in the latest AP Top 25. This past Saturday the Tigers rolled over South Carolina State 59-0 in a game that had no posted betting line. This was after they failed to cover against the spread as favorites in earlier victories against Auburn and Troy. The total stayed UNDER in both of those games.

<p>
All eyes this season continue to be on Heisman hopeful quarterback Deshaun Watson. Through the first three games of the season he has thrown for 692 yards and seven touchdowns, while adding another 84 yards on the ground. While he has not necessarily been spectacular over the past three weeks, Watson has been effective enough to have the Tigers ranked 26th in the nation in passing yards with 289.3. Clemson has gotten some stellar play from its defense, which is currently ranked 11th in the country in points allowed (12.3).

Georgia Tech has also jumped out to a straight-up 3-0 start while going 1-1 against the spread in wins over Boston College on the road and Vanderbilt at home. There was no posted spread in a 35-10 win in Week 2 against Mercer. The total line closed at 43 points for both of the Yellow Jackets other games and it stayed UNDER against the Eagles before going OVER in last Saturday’s 38-7 win against the Commodores.
</p>
<p>
The Yellow Jackets have relied heavily on a rushing attack that has been able to churn out an average of 257.3 yards a game. Senior quarterback Justin Thomas has only completed 19-of-38 passing attempts for 335 yards in three games, but he remains a force in that Georgia Tech ground game with 169 yards rushing on 28 carries for an average of six yards an attempt. This is another team that also owes its fast start to a stingy defense that is only giving up an average of 10.3 points a game.

Clemson at Georgia Tech Prediction

Neither team has been really tested so far in the early part of the season, but the clear edge still has to go to Clemson as the better all-around team. This is a great opportunity for a program like Georgia Tech to make its presence felt both in the ACC and on the national level, but it is still going to be a tall task to actually get it done.

I see this game as a 10-point spread in favor of the Tigers so the current betting line of 9.5 is just low enough for me to go with a “best bet” pick on Clemson to win and cover this Thursday night in Atlanta.
