2019 NBA World Championship Betting Futures

September 21, 10:53 AM EDT

The Golden State Warriors have been the dominant franchise in the NBA over the past four seasons with three championship runs, but massive player movement this past offseason could change the entire complexion of the league’s top teams heading into this year’s run towards the title.

Sports bettors riding the Golden State Warriors on the NBA championship futures odds board at 5Dimes online sportsbook would have cashed three winning tickets in the last four seasons. The reigning champs remain at the top of the list heading into the 2018/2019, but a rash of player movement involving some of the biggest names in the game could make things a bit more interesting this time around.

2019 NBA World Championship Top Betting Favorite

There is Golden State at -160 against the rest of the field. Been there, done that with basically the same roster sets the Warriors as the odds-on favorites to win their third world title in a row and their fourth in five seasons. The only team they could not get past in this fantastic run was Cleveland with LeBron James raising his game to a whole other level in that storybook comeback in the 2016 NBA Finals.

Keep in mind that this was before Kevin Durant joined Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green in Golden State. In my book, the only way the Warriors do not win it all this season is if two or more of those four players miss the entire postseason due to injury.

2019 NBA World Championship Top Betting Contenders

The Boston Celtics have the second-best odds on the board to win the 2019 NBA Championship at +600. You could make a strong case for the Celtics as the new ‘Beast of the East’ with James now playing in the Western Conference. They went all the way to last year's Eastern Conference Finals with Kyrie Irving out of the lineup. If he can stay healthy this season along with the triumphant return of Gordon Hayward, Boston should win the East as a -110 favorite. Getting past Golden State in the Finals is a whole other story.

With James playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, a team that has not posted a winning record since going 45-37 in 2012/13 is suddenly a +600 third-favorite to win the West this season. The Lakers’ odds to win a world title this season are fourth-best on the list at +1000.

As far as my top-valued pick among contenders, I would still go with the Houston Rockets as +500 second-favorites to win the West and as +800 third-favorites to win it all. With a healthy Chris Paul for the entire postseason, Houston could close the gap with the Warriors. If the addition of an aging Carmelo Anthony works in their favor, the Rockets have the best chance of any team to dethrone the current kings of the NBA.

2019 NBA World Championship Top Betting Longshots

Betting longshots in this futures bet should be written off as a charitable donation to your favorite sportsbook. The NBA is dominated by a few franchises despite having 30 teams in the league. Upsets happen all the time in the regular season, but when the playoffs roll around it is time to go chalk right across the board.

With the addition of Kawhi Leonard to Toronto's roster as one of the five best players in the league, there is some value in the Raptors' +400 odds to win the East, but the loss of DeMar DeRozan to San Antonio to land him was a tall price to pay. Toronto's odds to win a world title are set at +1600.

The youth movement in Philadelphia led by Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons helped the 76ers post their first winning season in six years at 52-30. This team may be the future of the NBA, but after failing to add a veteran superstar to the roster, it will be hard-pressed to get past Boston in the East as a +350 second-favorite to win the conference. The 76ers’ betting odds to make that leap all the way to the top of the NBA are set at +1200.
