Moneyline: Tor -119/Phil +109
Total: 8.5

If the playoffs started today, both the Blue Jays and Phillies would be in, but there's still work to do, heading into the first game of this quick two-game inter-league series in Philadelphia Tuesday night. Former American Leaguer Kyle Gibson goes for the Phillies here against former National Leaguer Ross Stripling for Toronto.

How are we playing this game with our free TOR/PHI pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Tuesday's baseball betting lines opened Toronto and Stripling as -120 favorites over Philadelphia and Gibson, with an over/under of nine runs. Early betting action then dipped that total to 8.5.

Blue Jays-Phillies MLB Betting Preview

Toronto just took two of three games at Baltimore over the weekend, missing out on the sweep by blowing a late lead and losing Sunday's series finale 5-4. The Blue Jays then had Monday off.

Just before that, Toronto took three of five games from Tampa Bay, and just before that, it took two of three from Texas. Going back a bit further, the Blue Jays own a six-series winning streak, going 15-6 over their last 21 games.

At 83-64 overall, Toronto probably won't catch the first-place Yankees in the AL East race, but it also leads the AL wild-card race by a game over the second-place Rays and 6.5 games over the fourth-place Orioles.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, just got swept three games at Atlanta over the weekend, losing Sunday's series finale 5-2. The Phillies then also had Monday off.

Just before that, Philly lost the last game of a series with Miami. So the Phillies lug a four-game losing skid into Tuesday night.

At 80-66 overall, the Phillies won't catch the first-place Mets in the NL East, but they still own the No. 3 spot in the NL wild-card standings, 2.5 games clear of fourth-place Milwaukee.

This series is the second meeting between these two teams this season. Back in July, the Blue Jays swept two games from Philadelphia up at Rogers Centre.

Tuesday's Pitching Match-Up

<a class="advblue" href="https://www.sportsbettingstats.com/mlb/pitcherlog/48304" title="Kyle Ginson Pitching Game Stats">Gibson is 13/28 on quality starts this season. Last Wednesday, he held Miami to one run and six hits through six innings, with zero walks against seven strikeouts, in a 6-1 Philadelphia victory. But over his two starts previous to that, he got knocked around for 11 runs through just 7 2/3 innings.

The Phillies are 16-12 with Gibson this season but only 3-4 his last seven times out.

In his last start against Toronto, back in April of last season while with Texas, Gibson tossed six scoreless innings, with one walk and eight whiffs, in a 2-1 Rangers win.

<a class-"advblue" href="https://www.sportsbettingstats.com/mlb/pitcherlog/79413" title="Ross Stripling Pitching Game Logs">Stripling is 8/21 on quality starts this year, working on a run of three in a row. Last Wednesday, he held Tampa to one run and three hits through 6 1/3 innings of a 5-1 Blue Jays victory. And over his last three starts, he's held foes to six runs and eight hits through 18 1/3 innings, with four walks and 16 K's.

Toronto is 14-7 with Stripling this season, 8-1 his last nine times out.

In his most recent start against Philadelphia, back in July, Stripling allowed just two unearned runs and two hits through seven frames of an 8-2 Jays win.

Splits With the Sticks

Toronto is batting .263 against right-handed pitching this season, with a .327 team OBP and a .430 team slugging percentage. Numbers like those lead us to rank this line-up among the top three or four in Baseball in this split.

Philadelphia is slashing .248/.308/.417 against right-handed pitching. The Phillies have also scored a total of just ten runs over their last four games.

The Bullpens

The Philadelphia bullpen owns a 4.17 ERA this season, along with a 1.37 WHIP.

The Blue Jays pen owns a 3.77 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.
Jays at Phillies Betting Prediction 9/20/22

We give Stripling the edge in the pitching match-up in part because Toronto is 8-1 over his last nine starts. From there, the Blue Jays own the edges in both the splits with the sticks and in the bullpen comparison. Also, Toronto is 28 games over .500 this season against RH starters. We're betting the Blue Jays Tuesday night.
