Mariners-Marlins MLB Betting Preview

Miami took the opener of this series Friday night, 8-6. The Marlins scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning Friday, let Seattle score three in the top of the second, then put up a four-spot in the bottom of the second and two more in the third, and hung on from there for the victory. Miami won as a -110 favorite on Friday's dime line and the game played over a total of eight runs. With Friday's win, the Marlins now own a six-game winning streak. At 11-8 overall, Miami sits in second place in the NL East, three games behind the first-place Mets. With Friday's loss, the Mariners now own a three-game losing skid. At 11-9 overall, the M's sit in second place in the AL West, 2.5 games behind the first-place Angels.

Saturday's Pitching Match-Up

Lefty Luzardo is 0/3 on quality starts this season, but some of that is due to a short leash. Last Sunday, he held Atlanta to one run and two hits through five innings, with four walks and eight strikeouts, in a 5-4 Miami victory, which was a welcome rebound after giving up five runs - four earned - through just 4 1/3 innings his last time out against St. Louis. On the season, Luzardo has allowed six ER and 18 base-runners (hits + walks) through 14 1/3 innings, with 23 whiffs. The Marlins are only 1-2 with Luzardo this season, but they should be 2-1. In his only career start against Seattle two years ago while with Oakland, Luzardo gave up four runs and three home runs through 4 2/3 frames of a 6-5 A's loss. Ray is 3/4 on quality starts this year. Last Sunday, he limited Kansas City to two runs and five hits through six innings of a 5-4 Mariners win. And just before that, he held Texas to two runs through six innings of a 6-2 Seattle victory. On the season, Ray has given up 11 runs and 30 base-runners through 25 1/3 innings, and the M's are 3-1 with him. Last year, pitching for Toronto, Ray started twice against Miami, allowing just two runs and ten hits through 12 innings, with 15 K's. His Blue Jays won both those games.

Splits With the Sticks

Seattle is batting .236 against left-handed pitching this season, with a .359 team OBP and a .418 team slugging percentage. But the Mariners might be down a big stick with DH Mitch Haniger (39 HR last year) questionable after fouling a pitch off his ankle Friday night.

Miami is slashing .204/.293/.316 against left-handed pitching.

The Bullpens

The Seattle bullpen owns a 2.95 ERA this season, along with a 1.09 WHIP. The Marlins pen owns a 3.36 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

Mariners vs. Marlins Prediction 4/30/22

We give Ray the edge in the pitching match-up here. From there, with Seattle down one big bat, we'll call the splits with the sticks and the bullpen comparisons about even. So, on the whole, we see a darn good pitcher getting an underdog price, and we won't pass that up. We're taking the Mariners here for our free MLB pick for Saturday.
