Pitching Match Up

Oakland: Andrew Triggs (5-5, 3.36 ERA)
Tampa Bay: Alex Cobb (4-5, 4.52 ERA)

Andrew Triggs goes for the A's in this series opener and he was shelled in his last start giving up six earned runs in only three innings in a 13-3 loss to the Washington Nationals. Oakland has lost his last three starts where he has given up 12 earned runs in 14 innings of work. The A's had won three straight of his road starts before losing his last outing on the road. Triggs only allowed one HR in his first seven starts, but has served up five in his last four starts. This game will be Triggs’ first career start against Tampa Bay, but did pitch two innings of relief against them last season. Oakland has won four of his last five road starts.

Alex Cobb gets the call for the Rays tonight and in his last start he was absolutely lit up giving up nine earned runs on 14 hits in five innings in a 9-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The Rays have lost two of his last three starts where he gave up 13 runs in the two losses and only one in the win. In Cobb’s career facing the A's he has seven starts and is 3-2 with a solid ERA of 2.44. Tampa Bay has lost four of Cobb’s last five starts and they have lost his last five starts against a team with a losing record. At home this season Cobb is 1-3 with an ERA of 3.67.

Oakland A's vs. Tampa Bay Rays Prediction

The A's had won two in a row only giving up a total of four runs before losing their last game where they gave up seven runs. They are in the basement of the AL West 16 games out of first place and they have the fewest road wins in the Majors. After dropping four in a row the Rays have won two straight and with their last win they got to .500 on the season. They are in 4th place in the AL East 5.5 games back of the New York Yankees. This game is a tough one to call since both starters were less than impressive in their last start. I have to go with the Rays in this one mainly because they are at home and on top of that Cobb has pitched well against Oakland in his career. Tampa Bay will get the win and move over .500 on the season.
