The surging Cardinals and slumping Yankees meet for the middle game of a three-game inter-league series at Busch Stadium Saturday night. Lefty Jordan Montgomery, just acquired from the Yankees, hits the hill for St. Louis here against Domingo German for New York.

How are we playing this game with our free Yankees/Cards pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Saturday's baseball betting lines opened New York at around -120 over St. Louis, with an over/under of 8.5 runs. Early betting action then slid this game into pick 'em territory.

Yankees-Cardinals MLB Betting Preview

St. Louis took the opener of this series Friday night 4-3. The Cardinals trailed that game 3-1 into the latter stages but scored once in the bottom of the sixth and twice in the bottom of the eighth to steal the victory.

St. Louis won Friday as a +140 home dog on the dime line against Nestor Cortes, and the game played under a total of 8.5 runs.

With Friday's win, the Cardinals are 7-1 over their last eight games. At 58-48, overall, St. Louis is now tied with Milwaukee for the lead in the NL Central.

With Friday's loss, New York is 1-4 over its last five games and 6-9 over its last 15. At 70-37 overall, the Yankees still lead the AL East by 10.5 games over second-place Toronto, but their lead over Houston in the battle for the best record in the American League is down to a half-game.

This series is the first meeting between these teams since 2017.

Saturday's Pitching Match-Up

<a class="advblue" href="https://www.sportsbettingstats.com/mlb/pitcherlog/116017" title="Jordan Montgomery Pitching Game Logs">Montgomery, who just came over to St. Louis in a trade with the Yankees at the deadline, is 8/21 on quality starts this season but 0 for his last two. Last Sunday, he gave up four runs and four hits through four innings of an 8-6 New York loss to Kansas City. And just before that, he gave up five runs - four earned - in less than three innings of a 6-3 loss to the Mets.

The Yankees, a team that's 30-plus games over .500 on the season, played just 9-12 with Montgomery, although that was probably three games worse than they should have been, based on his performances.

This will be Montgomery's first career start against his former team.

<a class="advblue" href="https://www.sportsbettingstats.com/mlb/pitcherlog/99108" title="Domingo German Pitching Game Stats">German is 0/3 on quality starts this season, which for him just started two weeks ago, after recovering from a shoulder problem. Monday, he held Seattle to two runs and six hits through five frames of a 7-2 New York victory. And just before that, he gave up two runs through 4 2/3 innings of a 3-2 Yanks loss to the Mets.

New York is 1-2 with German this season, which sounds about right, based on what he's done so far.

This will be German's first career start against the Cardinals.

Splits With the Sticks

New York is batting .250 against left-handed pitching this season, with a .332 team OBP and an ML-best .474 team slugging percentage. But this line-up is operating without two big sticks, with Rizzo and Stanton both out with injuries.

St Louis is slashing .248/.317/.404 against right-handed pitching. The Cardinals have also scored at least five runs six times over their last eight games.

The Bullpens

The Cardinals bullpen owns a 3.57 ERA this season, along with a 1.22 WHIP.

The Yankees pen owns a 2.93 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.

MLB Betting Trends

The Yankees are 29-22 on the road this season and 23-8 against left-handed starters.

The Cardinals are 33-20 at home and 45-39 against right-handed starters.

Totals Report

The Over is 54-50 in Yankees games this season.

The Under is 54-48 in Cardinals games.

The Over is 27-24 at Busch Stadium this season.

We give Montgomery the edge in the pitching match-up here because he's been better than his 3-3 record might indicate. From there, we give New York the edge in the bullpen comparison, but we can't give it the edge with the sticks because they're missing a couple of key guys. Ultimately what we like about this game is St. Louis is hot while the Yankees have hit some doldrums, and those are trends that mean a lot to us. So we're betting the Cardinals Saturday night.
