After splitting the first two games of this three-game AL East rivalry series at Fenway Park, the Yanks and Sox play a rubber match Sunday night. James Tallion gets the call for New York against Michael Wacha for Boston.

How are we playing this game with our free NYY/BOS pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Sunday's baseball betting lines opened New York at around -135 over Boston, with an over/under of 9.5 runs. Both figures were holding steady in the early betting action.

Yankees-Red Sox MLB Betting Preview

Boston used a late rally to win the opener of this series Friday night, 3-2, but New York came from behind to win Saturday's game by that same score of 3-2. The Red Sox won Friday as +100 "underdogs" on the dime line, while the Yankees won Saturday as -140 favorites. And both games played Under on the totals.

With Saturday's win, New York is 2-3 over its last five games. Going back a bit further, the Yankees are just 2-8 over their last ten games, as the bats have gone cold.

At 72-42 overall, New York still leads the AL East by ten games over second-place Toronto but also now trails Houston by a game and a half in the battle for the best record in the American League.

With Saturday's loss, Boston is 2-1 over its last three games but 3-7 over its last 10. At 56-59, the Sox are dead in the AL East race, and they're now 4.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the battle for the No. 3 spot in the AL wild-card standings.

The Yankees lead the season series with the Red Sox seven games to five.

Saturday's Pitching Match-Up

<a class="advblue" href="https://www.sportsbettingstats.com/mlb/pitcherlog/48251" title="Michael Wacha Pitching Game Stats">Wacha is just 3/13 on quality starts this season. Most recently, six weeks ago, he gave up four runs in five innings in a 6-5 Boston loss to Toronto. He's since done some time on the injured list with a sore shoulder and made a couple of rehab starts down in the Minors. But apparently, he's ready to return to the Bigs.

The Red Sox are 9-4 with Wacha this season, and he can actually claim some credit for that.

Over his last three starts against the Yankees last year while he was with the Rays, Wacha allowed just one unearned run and five hits through 16 innings, with four walks against 20 strikeouts. Somehow, Tampa only managed to win one of those three games.

<a class="advblue" href="https://www.sportsbettingstats.com/mlb/pitcherlog/79628" title="Jameson Taillon Pitcher Game Odds">Taillon is 7/22 on quality starts this year, often pitching on a short leash. Monday, he held Seattle to three runs and three hits through seven innings of a 9-4 New York victory, which was a welcome rebound from his previous outing in which he gave up two home runs and walked four in less than five innings of an 8-6 loss to those same Mariners.

The Yankees are 17-5 with Taillon this season, although that's probably three games better than they should be, based on his performances.

Over his last five starts against the Red Sox, three last year and two already this season, Taillon allowed 11 ER and 23 hits through 28 2/3 innings. The Yanks won three of those five games.

Splits With the Sticks

New York is batting .243 against right-handed pitching this season, with a .330 team OBP and a .432 team slugging percentage. But the Yankees are down a couple of good sticks at the moment, and lately, it's shown; they've been held to three runs or less seven times over their last nine games.

Boston is slashing .251/.309/.402 against right-handed pitching.

The Bullpens

The Red Sox bullpen owns a 4.40 ERA this season, along with a 1.33 WHIP.

The New York pen owns a 2.95 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

MLB Betting Trends

New York is 31-27 on the road this season and 49-32 against right-handed starters.

Boston is 28-30 at home and 39-49 against right-handed starters.

Totals Report

The Over is 56-54 in Yankees games this season.

The Under is 55-51 in Red Sox games.

The Under is 28-26 at Fenway Park this season.

The Over 8-4 in Yanks-Sox games this season.

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox Odds, Analysis, Free Pick

We give Wacha a slight edge in the pitching match-up because he's been so good against the Yankees recently. However, he may very well be on a short leash, coming off the IL, and would then turn the game over to the Boston bullpen, which is an iffy proposition. Meanwhile, New York owns a great bullpen while the splits with the sticks are about even. So when we add things up, we like the Yankees to take the rubber match of this series at this very reasonable price.
