Pitching Match Up

Minnesota: Ervin Santana (9-4, 2.97 ERA)
Cleveland: Mike Tomlin (4-8, 6.07 ERA)

Ervin Santana goes for the Twins in this AL Central series finale and in his last start he was lit up for six earned runs in five innings, but the lineup bailed him out in a 9-7 win over the Chicago White Sox. The Twins have won two of his last three starts, but in his last two starts he has given up 11 earned runs in 10 innings. Santana has pitched great against the Indians in his two starts this season totaling 13 innings and only giving up one earned run on six hits. In 23 career starts against the Indians Santana is 6-11 with an ERA of 4.00. The Twins have won four of his last five road starts, but have lost five of his last seven road starts against a team with a winning record.

Mike Tomlin gets the nod today for the Indians and he was also not sharp in his last start going four innings and giving up five earned runs in a 6-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. The Indians have lost three of his last four starts and in that span he has gone 18 innings and has given up 16 earned runs. Tomlin has two starts against the Twins, where Minnesota has gone 1-1, totaling 14 innings and giving up four earned runs. He opposed Santana on May 12th at home only giving up one earned run in eight innings, but the lineup did not give any support in a 1-0 Cleveland loss. The Indians have won five of Tomlin’s last six starts against the Twins and in 16 career appearances, including 13 starts, against them he is 5-5 with an ERA of 5.13. Overall, Cleveland has lost four of his last six starts.

Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Indians Prediction

The Twins have won the first two games of this series and they can avenge getting swept in recent four-game series at home at the hands of the Indians by getting a win today and sweeping them in this series. If they can do that they will also take over first place in the AL Central, as they trail Cleveland by ½ game. Minnesota has outscored the Indians 9-2 in the two games in this series. The Indians had won eight of nine games where they were solid at the plate before only totaling two runs in losing the first two games of this series. Both starters in today’s contests are coming off subpar last outings, but each has pitched well in the two starts facing each other’s teams this season. Santana has given up at least five earned runs in three of his last four starts and he will struggle in this game. Tomlin may not have the best outing, but he will be decent and that will be good enough, as the Indians lineup will be the main reason for the win. Cleveland will get the W in this game and avoid the sweep.
