Pitching Match Up

Miami: Jose Urena (12-6, 3.71 ERA)
Atlanta: Mike Foltynewicz (10-11, 4.75 ERA)

Jose Urena takes the mound for the Marlins tonight and in his last outing he was solid only giving up one earned run in seven innings, but did not get much help in a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Marlins have lost his last two starts where he has given up five earned runs in 11 innings of work. Miami had lost Urena’s first two starts against the Braves season, but won his last one facing them where he gave up one earned run in six innings on only three hits in a 4-1 Marlins win. Miami is 6-1 in his last seven road starts and are 14-6 in his last20 starts overall.

Mike Foltynewicz gets the nod for the Braves and he gave up two earned runs in six innings in his last start, which was a 2-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The Braves have dropped his last five starts where in the first three he was roughed up, but in the last two only gave up a total of three earned runs in 11 innings, but got no runs of support. Foltynewicz has four starts against the Marlins this season where he is 2-0 with an ERA of 2.66 and the last time he faced them he had a season high with 11 strikeouts in an Atlanta win. The Braves had won seven straight home starts with Foltynewicz on the hill before losing his last two outings at SunTrust Park. Atlanta has won four of his last five starts against a team with a winning record.

Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves Prediction

The Marlins are reeling, as they have lost five in a row and 10 of their last 11 games. Their skid may have cost them a chance at making a playoff run, as they are out of the NL East race and now eight games out of the 2nd NL Wild Card. In Miami’s five game skid they have been outscored 26-10. After losing two in a row the Braves have won their last two games. They are out of the playoff race, but they have won five of their last six games facing the Marlins. Both pitchers had good outings in their last start, but got little help from the lineup. In some interesting trends the Braves are 6-0 in Foltynewiczs’s last six starts against the Marlins and Miami is 1-4 in Urena’s last five starts against the Braves. I am sticking with those trends, as the Braves will take the 2nd game of this series tonight in what will be a low scoring pitcher’s duel.
