Pitching Match Up

Miami: Odrisamer Despaigne (0-3, 3.57 ERA)
Atlanta: R.A. Dickey (9-9, 4.14 ERA)

Odrisamer Despaigne takes the hill for this series finale and in his last outing he only gave up one earned run in seven innings, but got little support in a 2-1 loss to the Washington Nationals. The Marlins have lost three of his last four starts including his last two where he gave up four earned runs in 11 innings of work. Despaigne makes his 4th start of the season after spending much of it coming out of the bullpen. He has not won a game since the 2015 season and in his last three starts he has an ERA of 2.65 and has held opponents to a .213 average.

R.A. Dickey goes for the Braves today and in his last outing he was not sharp getting tagged up for six earned runs in four innings in an 8-2 loss to the Texas Rangers. The Braves have lost three of his last four starts where he has given up 14 earned runs in the three losses and only one in the win. Atlanta is 1-1 in Dickey’s two starts against the Mariners this season and the last time he faced them in the beginning of August he gave up three earned runs in six innings in a 5-3 Braves win. Atlanta has lost four of Dickey’s last five home starts, but they have won six of his last seven home starts against a team with a losing record.

Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves Prediction

The Marlins have lost two of the first three games of this series and have dropped 12 of their last 14 games. With their recent swoon they are now, pretty much, out of the playoff race well out in the NL East and nine games back of the 2nd Wild Card. The Braves have won three of their last four games and have won two of the first three games of this series by an identical 6-5 score. Atlanta is out of the playoff race. Despaigne looks for his first win since the 2015 season and while he has pitched well lately he has not gotten much run support. He will get some today, as Dickey will struggle for the 4th time in his last five starts. The Marlins will take this game and salvage a series split and keep their faint playoff hopes alive.
