After coming from behind to take the opener of this series Monday night, the Dodgers go looking for more Tuesday night in suburban Atlanta. Spencer Strider hits the hill for the Braves here against rookie righty Bobby Miller for Los Angeles. How are we playing this game with our free LAD/Atl pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Tuesday's baseball betting market opened Atlanta and Strider at around -210 over LA and Miller, with an over/under of eight runs. Both figures were holding steady in the early betting action.

Dodgers-Braves Betting Preview

Los Angeles grabbed the opener of this series Monday night 8-6. The Dodgers spotted Atlanta the first four runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning, then scored one in the second, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth on a Freeman home run and hung on from there for the victory. LA won Monday as a +140 underdog against Charlie Morton, and the game was played over a total of 9.5 runs. With Monday's win, the Dodgers are only 3-4 over their last seven games. But at 30-19 overall, Los Angeles leads the NL West by a game and a half over second-place Arizona. Meanwhile, with Monday's loss, the Braves are only 4-6 over their last ten games. But at 29-18 overall, Atlanta leads the NL East by 4.5 games over the second-place Mets. Last year the Dodgers took the season series from the Braves four games to two.

Tuesday's Pitching Match-Up

Strider is 4/9 on quality starts this season, pitching on a somewhat short leash. Last Wednesday against Texas, he gave up four runs and six hits, including two homers, through five innings, although Atlanta rallied to win that game 6-5. But over his last three starts, he's allowed eight runs - seven earned - and 15 hits through 16 2/3 innings, with four walks against 29 strikeouts. The Braves are 8-1 with Strider this season, although that's probably a couple of wins better than they should be, based on his performances. In his one start against the Dodgers last season, Strider tossed six innings of five-hit, shutout ball with zero walks against seven whiffs, although Atlanta lost that game 5-3 in extra innings. Miller is making his ML debut Tuesday night. A first-round draft pick in 2020, Miller earned his shot with the Big Club by going 10-10 with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP through parts of three Minor League seasons.

Splits With the Sticks

Los Angeles is batting .243 against right-handed pitching this season, with a .332 team OBP and a .457 team slugging percentage. The Dodgers have also scored at least five runs in each of their last six games. Atlanta is slashing .236/.319/.412 against right-handed pitching.

The Bullpens

The Braves bullpen owns a 3.88 ERA this season, along with a 1.21 WHIP and a 3.59 K/BB ratio. The LA pen owns a 4.62 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, and a 2.81 K/BB ratio.

MLB Betting Trends

Los Angeles is 13-12 on the road this season and 21-13 against right-handed starters. Atlanta is 12-11 at home and 19-14 against right-handed starters.

Totals Report

  • The overs are 27-21 in Dodgers games this season.
  • The overs are 28-19 in Braves games.
  • The overs are 16-7 at Truist Park this season.

Dodgers at Braves Free Pick 5/23/23

Strider gets the obvious checkmark in the pitching match-up, and Atlanta owns the edge in the bullpen comparison. But Los Angeles owns the advantage in the splits with the sticks, scoring runs in bunches as of late. So the line on this game certainly seems inflated. The Dodgers just won a game as an underdog with a rookie starting pitcher Monday night; we like the betting value with LA Tuesday night, too.
