Pitching Match Up

Detroit: Matthew Boyd (2-5, 5.40 ERA)
Kansas City: Ian Kennedy (0-4, 4.43 ERA)

Matthew Boyd gets the start in this series finale and he only went four innings in his last start giving up three earned runs in an 8-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Detroit has lost his last six starts and in his last three starts he has really struggled only lasting 11 innings and giving up 14 earned runs. Boyd had nine career starts facing Kansas City and has gone 1-3 with a less than impressive ERA of 9.00. The Tigers have lost 13 of his last19 road starts and they have also lost four of their last five games against the Royals with him on the hill.

Ian Kennedy gets the starting nod for the Royals and in his last start he went five innings and gave up four earned runs, but got help from the lineup in a 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians. Run support is not something he has got much of in his four home starts where Kansas City has only totaled eight runs. Previous to Kennedy’s last start the Royals had lost four straight with him on the mound where he gave up 12 earned runs in 18 innings of work. Kennedy has six career starts against Detroit 1-3 with an ERA of 3.79. The Tigers have lost four of his last four home starts and they have also lost four of his last five starts against a team with a losing record.

Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals Prediction

The Tigers scored 10 runs in the first game of this series and were shut out in the 2nd game. They have lost two of their last three games and sit in 3rd place in the AL Central four games back of the Indians and Twins. The Royals had lost two in a row where they gave up 10 runs in each game before the shutout win in yesterday’s game. They are in last place in the AL East, but still only 5.5 games out of first place. Boyd has really been struggling as of late and he has not had much success in his career facing the Royals. Both of those things will continue, as while Kansas City has scored the fewest runs in the Majors they will get to Boyd tonight. That will be welcomed from Kennedy, who has not gotten much help from the Royals lineup at home this season. He will have a good start picking up his first win of the season leading KC to a W and they will also take the series.
