Colorado: German Marquez (4-3, 4.44 ERA)
Pittsburgh: Chad Kuhl (1-5, 5.63 ERA)

German Marquez goes for the Rockies in this series finale and in his last start he only went three innings, but only gave up one earned run on two hits in a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. In his previous start he was lit up for six earned runs in five innings in an 8-5 loss to the San Diego Padres. However, the Rockies have won five of his last six starts and in those five wins Marquez has given up five earned runs in 27 innings of work. This will be the rookies first career start against the Pirates and in his last five starts he has an ERA of 4.01. Colorado has won four of Marquez’s last five starts against teams from the NL Central.

Chad Kuhl gets the call for the Pirates tonight and he had a solid last start only giving up one earned run on four hits in five innings, but the bullpen fell apart in a 9-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. The Pirates have lost five of his last six starts including his last three. However, even though Pittsburgh has dropped his last two outings the bullpen is mainly to blame, as he has given up three earned runs in 10 innings, but the Pirates gave up 15 runs overall in those two games. In Kuhl’s last four starts he has an ERA of 3.72 and this will be his first career start against the Rockies. The Pirates have only won one of his last 11 starts facing a team that has a winning record.

Colorado Rockies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Prediction

The Rockies have lost three in a row where they have only totaled nine runs and have only scored two runs in each of the losses in this series. With their recent slide they are now tied with the red-hot L.A. Dodgers, who have won five straight, atop the NL West. Pittsburgh is riding a four-game win streak, which is their longest of the season, and in their last three games they have only given up a total of five runs. While still five games under .500 they are only 3.5 games out of first place in the NL Central. Since former MVP Andrew McCutchen was demoted to 6th in the batting order he has been on fire hitting nearly .400 in 17 games where he has 15 RBI and he went deep twice in yesterday’s game. While the Rockies still lead the Majors in road wins they have lost their last three road games. They will not improve upon their road record tonight. Kuhl will have another solid start, get some run support, and the bullpen will help him out for a change. The Pirates will win their 5th in a row and complete the series sweep.
