Pitching Match Up

Chicago: Jon Lester (9-7, 4.46 ERA)
Pittsburgh: Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.50 ERA)

Jon Lester goes for the Cubs tonight and in his last outing he gave up four earned runs in five innings in a 14-12 win over the Atlanta Braves. The Cubs had lost his previous three starts where he gave up 13 earned runs in 13 innings and in the start before his last one he had one of his worst starts of the season giving up seven earned runs and not lasting past the 2nd inning. After a great first start against the Pirates this season Lester has been lit up in his last two against them giving up 16 runs, nine earned, in only six innings of work. The Cubs have lost all three of Lester’s starts this season against the Pirates and they have lost four straight to them overall with him on the hill. Chicago has won five of his last six road starts and 23 of his last 28 starts against a team with a losing record.

Jameson Taillon gets the nod for the Pirates in this series finale and his last outing was a good one not giving up any earned runs in six innings in a 6-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds. After dropping two in a row with him on the hill the Pirates have won his last two starts where he has given up one earned run in 10 innings. Taillon was solid in his first start of the season against the Cubs, but in his last one he gave up four earned runs in five innings in a 7-1 Pittsburgh loss. In four career starts against the Cubs Taillon is 2-2 with an ERA of 3.68. The Pirates are 5-2 in Taillon’s last 7 starts after allowing 2 runs or less in their previous game.

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Prediction

The Cubs snapped their three-game losing streak with a win over the Pirates yesterday. They are in the lead in the NL Central with a four game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals and 4.5 games up on the Milwaukee Brewers. Chicago’s lineup has been struggling as of late only totaling five runs in their last four games. The Pirates had won four in a row before the loss to the Cubs last night. They are 9.5 games out of first place in the division and 7.5 games for the 2nd Wild Card. Pittsburgh has only allowed four runs in their last five games. Lester has not been sharp as of late and has really struggled in his last two outings against the Pirates. I think that will continue tonight, as the Pirates lineup will get to him early and often and with Taillon having a good outing Pittsburgh will win this game and take the series.
