Boston: Drew Pomeranz (5-3, 4.24 ERA)
New York: Masahiro Tanaka (5-5, 6.34 ERA)

Drew Pomeranz goes for the Red So tonight in the first game of this series and is coming off a great last start where he only gave up one earned run in seven innings in a 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. After losing three in a row with him on the hill Boston has won his last two starts where he has given up three earned runs in 13 innings. Pomeranz has not given up more than two earned runs in any of his last four starts. Pomeranz is 1-1 with an ERA of 2.52 ERA in five appearances, including four starts, in his career against the Yankees. While New York is 5-1 in Pomeranz’s last six starts against a team with a winning record they are only 2-5 in his last seven road starts.

Masahiro Tanaka gets the nod for the Yankees and he was not sharp at all in his last start giving up seven earned runs in five innings in a 10-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. He has really been struggling as of late and in the Yankees losing his last four starts he has given up 22 earned runs in 16 innings. Tanaka faced the Red Sox earlier this season and was stellar going for a complete game 3-0 shutout win only giving up three hits. However, since that start he has an ERA of 8.42 in his last six starts. In Tanaka’s career facing the Red Sox he has11 starts and is 6-2 with an ERA of 3.52 and is 3-1 with an ERA of 3.77 in five home starts against them. Overall, the Yankees have won 16 of Tanaka’s last 21 home starts.

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Prediction

The Red Sox have won their last two games and they head into this big Al East series in 2nd place in the division only two games back of the Yankees. They have lost both games facing the Yankees this season and while they have been solid at home they are one game under .500 on the road. The Yankees have lost three of their last five games and they have struggling pitcher on the mound. New York has lost Tanaka’s last four starts where has given up at least six earned runs in each. On the other side of the coin Pomeranz has been solid in his last few outings. Just like the club the Yankees’ lineup has been up and down lately and DH Matt Holliday is swinging a hot bat riding a six-game hitting streak where he has three HR and seven RBI. His and the New York bats will be tamed by Pomeranz in this game and Tanaka will have another shaky start. Add those things up and you get a Red Sox win, which will snap their four-game losing streak to the Yankees.
