MLB Betting Odds

Tuesday’s baseball betting market opened Atlanta and Morton at around -175 over Boston and Pivetta, with an over/under of nine runs. Early betting action then dipped the Braves a nickel to -170.

Red Sox-Braves Betting Preview

Boston just took two of three games at Philadelphia over the weekend, missing out on the sweep by losing Sunday’s series finale Sunday 6-1. The Red Sox then had Monday off.

Just before that Boston swept four games from Toronto and just before that they took two of three games from Cleveland.

So the Sox are 3-0 over their last three series and 8-1 over their last nine games.

At 21-15 overall Boston is off to a better start to this season than we expected.

Atlanta, meanwhile, just took two of three games from Baltimore, winning Sunday’s series rubber match 3-2. The Braves then also had Monday off.

Just before that Atlanta swept three games from Miami and just before that they took two of three from the Mets.

Going back a bit further the Braves are 4-0 over their last four series and 10-3 over their last 13 games.

At 24-11 overall Atlanta leads the NL by 3.5 games over Pittsburgh and the Dodgers.

Last year the Braves took three of four games from the Red Sox.

Tuesday's Pitching Match-Up

Morton is 3/6 on quality starts this season. Last Monday he gave up four runs and six hits through 5 1/3 innings of a 5-3 Atlanta loss to the Mets. But over his two starts previous to that he held the Marlins and Padres to two runs and eight hits through 13 innings, with five walks against 14 strikeouts.

The Braves are only 3-3 with Morton this season but that’s at least one game worse than they should be, based on his performances.

In his most recent start against Boston last season Morton got touched for five runs and three home runs through six innings, although Atlanta won that game 9-7 in extra innings.

Pivetta, by our tough standards, is 0/6 on quality starts this year. Last Wednesday he gave up three runs and two home runs through six innings of a 5-3 Red Sox win over the Blue Jays. But over his three starts previous to that he got tagged for 13 runs and 17 hits through 14 2/3 innings.

Boston is 3-3 with Pivetta this season and that’s about what they should be, with his up-and-down performance.

In his most recent outing against the Braves last year Pivetta allowed three runs through six innings of an 8-4 Red Sox defeat.

Splits With the Sticks

Boston is batting .278 against right-handed pitching this season, with a .343 team OBP and a .472 team slugging percentage. The Red Sox have also scored at least five runs eight times over their last nine games.

Atlanta is slashing .237/.325/.422 against right-handed pitching.

The Bullpens

The Braves bullpen owns a 3.60 ERA this season, along with a 1.12 WHIP and a ML-best 3.97 K/BB ratio.

The Boston pen owns a 3.46 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and a 2.59 K/BB ratio.

MLB Betting Trends

The Red Sox are 8-8 on the road this season and 12-11 against right-handed starters.

Atlanta is 9-8 at home and 15-8 against right-handed starters.

Boston is 11-9 as an underdog this season.

The overs are 21-14 in Braves games.

The overs are 13-4 at Truist Park this season.

Red Sox at Braves Free MLB Pick 05/9/23

Morton owns the edge in the pitching match-up and Atlanta probably owns a short edge in the bullpen comparison but Boston owns a solid advantage in the splits with the sticks. So the line on this game seems a bit out of whack. A team that’s 8-1 over its last nine games getting +150? We like the betting value with the Red Sox Tuesday night.
