The Edmonton Eskimos head to the Steel City to take on the Hamilton Tiger Cats on Sunday afternoon to open up the 2016 CFL playoffs. Edmonton came into this season as the defending Grey Cup Champ but it hardly looked the part with a straight-up 2-4 start out of the gate while going a costly 1-4-1 against the spread. With last week’s 41-17 romp against Toronto as 3.5-point home favorites, the Eskimos have quite a bit of momentum at the right time of the year with a 5-1 mark (SU and ATS) in their last six games.

Mike Reilly led the CFL in passing yards (5,554) and he was second on the list in touchdown throws with 28. He was also a big part of Edmonton’s running game with 406 rushing yards and nine more scores on the ground. This offense was second to Calgary in scoring with an average of 30.5 points a game, but defensively the Eskimos were a bit porous with a points-allowed average of 27.6.

Hamilton should probably be considered a playoff team in name only after going 7-11 SU with a 6-12 record ATS. It posted just two SU victories in its last eight games and it failed to cover in seven of those contests. The Tiger-Cats were 2-7 ATS in nine home games this season and the total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five games at home.

Edmonton Eskimos at Hamilton Tigercats Prediction

The only real chance that Hamilton has to advance past this round hinges on quarterback Zach Collaros playing at a very high level. He has battled through injuries all season long, but he was still seventh on the list in passing yards with 2,938 and he moved up to fourth in touchdown throws with 18. The problem against the Eskimos could be a defense that allowed the third-most points (27.9) in the league.

The West Division has dominated these inter-division matchups all season long and that is not about to change this Sunday in Hamilton. Lay the 2.5 points and take the Eskimos to advance.
