One of the most exciting match-ups in the World Cup comes very early in the competition when Portugal and Spain will clash on Friday for Group B. The two teams are the huge favorited to go through to the next phase, but Morocco and Iran will try to come in-between. Both sides will try to get a win here, a victory that would push them towards qualifying from the group.

Champions of Europe in 2016, Portugal will try to make the same impact in the World Cup. They really need to make this work, as their generation of players is aging, and this will probably be the last World Cup most of their players will ever participate in. Coach Fernando Santos is known for his defensive approach, despite having a player like Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks. Apart from Ronaldo, Portugal has some well-known players like Pepe, Joao Moutinho, and Ricardo Quaresma, but all these players are way over 30. This might be the final chance for Portugal to make a good run in a World Cup, as most of these players might not make it to the next competition.

On the other hand, we have Spain, who are thirsty for a good run in a major competition. They have been going through a dry spell in recent years, as they have failed miserably in the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Euro Cup. Champions of Europe in 2008 and 2012, and also World champions in 2010, Spain are not what they used to be back then. Xavi is no longer in the roster, while Iniesta is now in his mid-thirties and pretty close to retiring. Spain has somewhat of a problem up front, as apart from Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa, there is no other forward they can rely on. Moreover, they do have some great names in their defense, but Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique are under constant tension due to the grudge between Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Spain vs Portugal Prediction 06/15/2018

The two teams couldn't have had a worse schedule, as they both play their most difficult match in the opener. Spain seems like they have the upper hand here, as Portugal's defense is really old, and Spain's pacey wingers can cause problems. Neither team would like to lose so that we might see a comfortable draw here between the two. However, I find it impossible to see a goalless draw here, so I will go with the Over 2 Goals.
