France has had an impressive run to the final and they are the betting favorite facing surprise finalist Portugal. In the last two major tournaments held on French soil in the 1984 European Championship and 1998 World Cup the hosts won the tournament.

France kept a clean sheet in their last match facing Germany and they have scored nine goals in the three knockout stage matches.

Portugal’s offense has not been great in the three knockout stage matches, but their defense has only conceded one goal.

Portugal has not played exciting soccer and they have not faced a world power in the tournament, but they are in the final. Christiano Ronaldo, who scored the first goal in the semifinal match, and Nani are the two players up front and the duo the French defense has to key on. While the Portuguese offense has not been a dynamic one in the tournament Ronaldo does have three goals and three assists.

The French defense was superb in the match facing Germany repeatedly thwarting scoring chances. Things may be different in this match, as they should win the time of possession battle, which they did not do against Germany, and they have to defend the counter-attack.

France’s Antoine Griezmann has been stellar in the tournament with six goals including scoring both in the semifinal win over Germany. His movement is key, as the French are a very quick striking team led by the MF tandem of Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi.

The Portugal midfield is led by Renato Sanches and he has a tall task in this match from box-to-box. He will have to slow the pace in the middle of the pitch and set up the scoring chances for Ronaldo and company.

Tottenham GK Hugo Lloris has played well in this Euro and made several great saves in the win over Germany. He anchors the French defense that is coming off a high after their clean sheet facing World Cup titleholders Germany.
