The Broncos and Colts brought in new quarterbacks who were supposed to take them to the playoffs this season, but so far, they’ve combined for just three wins through eight games, heading into this week’s equine-themed edition of NFL Thursday night betting action.

Who do we like here for our free IND/DEN pick?

NFL Betting Lines

The Week 5 NFL betting odds opened Denver as a three-point favorite for Thursday night, with an over/under of right around 43. Early betting action then bumped the Broncos to -3.5 and the total to 43.5.

Colts Betting Preview

Indianapolis is a disappointing 1-2-1 on the season after losing at home to Tennessee last Sunday, 24-17. The Colts, a week after upsetting Kansas City, let the Titans hit the board on their first four possessions of the game and trailed 24-10 at the half. Indianapolis pulled to within 24-17 midway through the third quarter but could get no closer and lost outright as a 4.5-point favorite.

The Colts drove inside the Tennessee 25-yard line twice in the fourth quarter but came up empty both times.

Indianapolis actually out-gained the Titans 365-243 and won time of possession by a 34:26 split. But the Colts also got out-rushed 127-38 and lost the turnover battle 3-0, resulting in at least a -14 points differential.

New Indianapolis QB Matt Ryan has already fumbled nine times this season, losing three, and thrown five interceptions.

The Colts opened this season with that come-from-behind 20-20 tie at Houston, then laid a big egg in a 24-0 loss at Jacksonville, then upset the Chiefs 20-17. So last week’s effort looked like a classic letdown.

Going back into late last season, Indianapolis is 1-4-1 SU, 1-5 ATS over its last six games.

Broncos Betting Preview

Denver, meanwhile, is 2-2 on the season after losing at Las Vegas Sunday 32-23. That game was tied 16-16 late in the second quarter, and the Broncos were driving, but RB Melvin Gordon fumbled into a Raiders return touchdown. Denver fell behind by two scores in the third quarter, pulled to within 25-23 with seven minutes left but then allowed Las Vegas to drive right down the field 75 yards to a game-clinching touchdown.

The Broncos also came up short ATS as 2.5-point underdogs.

Denver got out-gained by Las Vegas 385-299, out-rushed 212-85, lost time of possession 35:25, and committed the only turnover of the game, that very costly Gordon fumble.

The Broncos opened this season with that 17-16 loss to Seattle in which it fumbled two balls away at the Seahawks’ goal line. Denver then won ugly over Houston 16-9 and San Francisco 11-10.

Both these teams are already banged up, and there’s some key names on this week’s injury list, most notably Indy RB Jonathan Taylor. Bettors might be wise to consult later reports before getting down on this game.

Colts-Broncos Recent History

These teams met most recently three seasons ago, a 15-13 Indianapolis home victory. But that’s already a long time ago for both these teams.

Colts at Broncos Week 5 Betting Predictions

Russell Wilson isn’t exactly lighting Denver on fire, but he still gets the checkmark in this quarterback match-up. From there, the Broncos are running the ball better than Indianapolis, and even if Taylor plays, he won’t be 100 percent with that bad ankle. Also, Denver owns the better defense. And the Broncos might have won last week if not for that fumble that turned into a Raiders touchdown. We’re giving the points with Denver Thursday night.
