The Bears are coming off a win with their backup quarterback while the Chargers are coming off a tough divisional loss, heading into this week’s edition of Sunday night football betting action.

Both these teams were hoping to contend for playoff spots this season, but both own just two wins so far.

The Week 8 NFL betting market opened the Chargers at -8 for Sunday night, with an over/under of right around 44. Early betting action then edged that spread to -8.5 and goosed that total to 46.5.

Bears-Chargers NFL Betting Preview

Chicago is 2-1 both SU and ATS over its last three games after beating Las Vegas last Sunday 30-12. The Bears, playing with a rookie backup at quarterback, scored touchdowns on two of their first four possessions of the game and led 14-3 at the half. Chicago then drove its first possession of the second half 88 yards to another touchdown and later added a pick-6, on its way toward victory.

The Bears out-gained the Raiders 323-234, out-rushed Las Vegas 173-39, and won the turnover battle 3-0, creating a +14 points differential.

Three weeks ago Chicago snapped a 14-game losing skid with a 40-20 win over Washington. Two weeks ago the Bears lost at home to Minnesota 19-13, even though they out-gained the Vikings 275-220.

So it appears this Chicago outfit might be making some progress.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles is 0-2 SU and ATS its last two times out after losing at Kansas City last Sunday 31-17. The Chargers played the Chiefs to a 17-17 tie late into the second quarter and only trailed 24-17 at the half. But they then came up totally empty in the second half and fell short ATS at +6.

Los Angeles gave up 483 yards of Kansas City offense, over 300 in the first half alone.

Two weeks ago the Chargers lost at home to Dallas 20-17.

Los Angeles opened this season with losses to Miami and Tennessee, then won games against Minnesota and Las Vegas. So at 2-4 overall, it’s safe to say the Chargers are underperforming so far this season.

These two teams have played three common opponents so far this season: Kansas City, Minnesota, and Las Vegas. The Chargers played those opponents to 2-1 both SU and ATS but -28 yards per game, the Bears to 1-2 both SU and ATS and -37 YPG.

These teams last met four seasons ago, a 17-16 Chargers win at Soldier Field. Philip Rivers quarterbacked the Bolts that day against Matt Trubisky for Chicago.

Totals Report

The overs are 6-1 in Bears games this season, which are averaging 49 total points.

The unders are 4-2 in Chargers games this season, which are averaging 50 points.

Through Thursday night, the unders are 66-41 (62 percent) in the NFL this season.

Bears at Chargers Pick ATS Week 8

Chicago is coming off a big win at home with its backup quarterback. This leads us to consider the Bears as good candidates for a letdown this week. Meanwhile, Los Angeles is running in two-game spurts; two losses, two wins, and now two losses again. Following a downer of a performance in the second half last week, we consider the Chargers as good candidates to bounce back with a more complete performance here. That line does seem a bit high, but Chicago already owns three double-digit defeats this season. We like Los Angeles for Sunday night, minus the points.
