Odds to Win the 2014 ACC Conference

Odds to Win the 2014 ACC Conference

David Schwab

We are closing in on the start of another college football season making it a great time to break down the futures odds for all the major conferences. This time around I will take a closer look at the betting odds for the Atlantic Coast Conference provided by 5Dimes.

Florida State Seminoles

  • Odds to win the ACC Atlantic Division 1/6
  • Odds to win the ACC Championship 4/11
  • Odds to win a National Championship 11/2

Florida State came into last season with high expectations as a 2/1 co-favorite to win the ACC and exceeded them by winning a national title behind freshman quarterback Jameis Winston. The Seminoles went a perfect 14-0 and Winston went on to win the Heisman Trophy. Not only will they have the top-ranked quarterback in the nation back in the fold, they will try and win their third-straight conference title and second national title with one of the most talented rosters on both sides of the ball. >Also back from an offense that was ranked second in the nation in scoring with 51.6 points per game are running back Karlos Williams and wide receiver Rashad Greene. Williams was second on the team in rushing with 730 yards and 11 touchdowns and Greene led the team in receptions with 76 for 1,128 yards and nine scores. Florida State remains stacked on a defense that was ranked first in points allowed by holding opponents to just 12.1 PPG.

Clemson Tigers Seminoles

  • Odds to win the ACC Atlantic Division 5/1
  • Odds to win the ACC Championship 10/1
  • Odds to win a National Championship 66/1

Clemson will once again have to compete in the shadow of the nation's best team after finishing the 2013 season 7-1 in conference play and 11-2 overall. The lone loss in the ACC was a 51-14 pasting at the hands of the Seminoles as a 4.5-point home underdog. The other loss was to South Carolina in their traditional season-ending rivalry. The Tigers finished the year ranked ninth in the country in scoring (40.2 PPG) and 24th in points allowed (22.2 PPG).

The biggest hole to fill heading into this season is the loss of versatile quarterback Tajh Boyd, who is now with the New York Jets. Look for Cole Stoudt to get the call as the new starter, but five-star recruit freshman Deshaun Watson is patiently waiting in the wings. The Tigers will also have to find someone to replace Boyd's top target Sammy Watkins and right now it appears that Adam Humphries has the best chance to fill that void. The main thing going for the Tigers this season is a solid core of starters back on defense, which should be the primary strength of this team.

Miami Hurricanes

  • Odds to win the ACC Coastal Division 3/2
  • Odds to win the ACC Championship 10/1
  • Odds to win a National Championship 100/1

Miami came into the 2013 season touted as a possible national title contender and it could not even win the ACC's Coastal Division with a 5-3 record in conference play. A 7-0 start gave way to a three-game slide that ended any hopes of any kind of title run. The Hurricanes were respectable on offense with a solid passing game and 33.8 PPG, but their downfall can be traced back to a defense finished the season ranked 66th in the nation in points allowed (26.8). They went on to finish 9-4 overall.

The quarterback position remains a huge concern for Miami heading into this season with Stephen Morris gone and Ryan Williams still recovering from an ACL injury. Freshman Kevin Olsen could get the call until Williams is ready to go or head coach Al Golden could go with Gray Crow or Kansas transfer Jake Heaps. Look for running back Duke Johnson to be an even bigger part of this offense after leading the team in rushing last season with 920 yards on 145 carries. There are still a number of question marks on defense given last season's performance

The Rest of the ACC

The odds for a few of the next best contenders to win the ACC this season include Virginia Tech at 10/1, North Carolina at 12/1 and new comer Louisville at 15/1.

Duke shocked the college football world by winning the Coastal Division last season at 6-2, but the Blue Devils' odds to repeat have been set at 7/1. Their odds to win the conference are listed at 20/1 followed by Georgia Tech at 25/1, Pittsburgh at 50/1, Syracuse and Virginia at 66/1 and North Carolina State at 75/1. Boston College and Wake Forest are bringing up the rear at 200/1.
