Tennessee passed a huge test a couple of weeks ago with that win over Alabama and now faces another one with a trip to Athens to challenge Georgia Saturday afternoon between the hedges. The Bulldogs are the defending national champs and ranked No. 1 in the opinion polls. But the Volunteers, on the strength of that victory over the Crimson Tide, are the No. 1 team in the first College Football Playoff rankings.

Nonetheless, the 'Dawgs are favored by a fat touchdown over the Vols.

Tennessee-Georgia Betting Odds

This week's college football betting lines opened Georgia as an 8.5-point favorite over Tennessee, with an over/under of right around 65.5. Both figures were held steady in the early betting action, but late action has the Dawgs climbing to -9.

Tennessee-Georgia College Football Betting Preview

The Volunteers are 8-0 for the first time since 1998, the last year they won a national championship, after crushing Kentucky at home last week 44-6. Tennessee, favored by 10 points, hit pay-dirt less than two minutes into the game and led 27-6 at the half. The Volunteers then blanked the Wildcats from there, tacked on 17 points, and covered quickly.

Tennessee out-gained Kentucky 422-205 and won the turnover battle 3-0, creating a +10 points differential.

Three weeks ago, the Vols out-lasted Alabama 52-49, then shook off any letdown scenario by bombing Tennessee-Martin 65-24, covering at -38. Toss in a win over LSU that looks better now than it did then, and we can see why Tennessee sits atop that CFP ranking.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, are 8-0 for the second straight season after beating Florida at the cocktail party last week, 42-20. Georgia hit the end zone on two of its first three possessions of the game and led 28-3 at the half. The 'Dawgs then got a little sloppy, allowed the Gators to get within 28-20 late in the third quarter but tacked on the last 14 points of the game to secure the victory.

However, Georgia came up just short of covering the spread at -23.

The Bulldogs out-gained Florida 555-371, and three-quarters of the yardage the Georgia defense gave up came after taking a 25-point lead. But the 'Dawgs also turned the ball over three times, which basically cost them 10 points. More than enough to send the cash the other way.

Two games ago, Georgia blanked Vanderbilt 55-0, covering at -38, and three weeks ago, it beat Auburn 42-10, covering at -28. Toss in wins over Oregon, South Carolina, and Kentucky, and it's easy to see why poll voters still like the Bulldogs. These two teams have played two common opponents so far this season. The Volunteers played Florida and Kentucky to 2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS, and +100 yards per game, while Georgia played the Gators and Wildcats to 2-0 SU, 0-2 ATS but +216 yards per game.

Tennessee-Georgia Recent History

The Bulldogs own a five-game winning streak on the Vols, going 4-1 ATS along the way. Last year in Knoxville, Georgia trailed 10-7 into the second quarter, then scored the next 34 points of the game and covered at -19. Our guess is Saturday's game will play out a little closer.

Tennessee at Georgia Prediction ATS 11/5/22

Georgia's still the defending national champion and playing at home, and it's only favored by 8.5 points. Which means Tennessee must be pretty good. The Volunteers are almost unstoppable on offense, and while the Bulldogs own the better defense, that unit also just lost a key guy in LB Smith (pectoral injury). This one should be a dandy, and a touchdown in the pocket sounds like a good place to start. We're taking Tennessee plus the points here.
