Euro Cup Group E Futures

Euro Cup Group E Futures

Jason Green

Group E is one of the tougher groups in the Euro and Belgium is the slight favorites over Italy, who has not won the tournament since way back in 1968.

Belgium +100

Belgium is in their golden generation and they won their group qualification scoring 24 goals and only conceding five. Their midfield is very solid and physical and they have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois. They have many world-class players with the likes of Eden Hazard, Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku, the team suffered a big blow losing captain and star defender Vincent Kompany to injury. That loss is a big one and he is the anchor of the defense, which will have to step up in his absence.

Italy +150

Italy went through the group stage unbeaten, but they did not look good doing so, especially in a couple of 1-0 wins over Malta. The Italians have overhauled their squad so they are going though a youth movement. They are a very tactical team now that scored 16 goals and conceded seven in their 10 qualifying matches. While they are young Italy still have the veterans of GK Gianluigi Buffon, MF Andrea Pirlo, and DF Giorgio Chiellini. While the Italians are not the giants they have been in the past they still have a lot of talent on the pitch and they know how to win big matches in big international tournaments.

Sweden +500

Not much has changed for Sweden in the last decade or so, as they have a star in FW Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but not much else. He was the hero of qualifying with a hart trick in the playoffs to secure a spot. The Swedes scored 15 goals in qualifying and conceded nine. Their midfield has some issues, which will be exposed playing Belgium and Italy, but with their world-class striker up front they will be dangerous.

Republic of Ireland +900

Ireland relies on their defense, which was solid in qualifying group play only conceding seven goals. This was even more impressive, as Germany and Poland were in their group and combined for 57 goals in qualifying play. The Irish have some players that used to be world-class, but they are an aging squad and veteran FW Robbie Keane will have to carry the attack. The Irish are scrappy, but they do not have one player on the squad that plays in an elite club in Europe.
