New York Rangers vs. Los Angeles Kings Game 5 Over/Under Pick
The New York Rangers find themselves back at the Staples Center this Friday night for Game 5 of this year's Stanley Cup Finals still trying to stay alive against the Los Angeles Kings, who hold the 3-1 series edge. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
Moneyline: New York +150 Los Angeles -165
Over/Under Line: 5 Un -125
After digging themselves into a 3-0 hole in this best-of-seven showdown, the Rangers came up with their best complete effort in these NHL Finals with a 2-1 victory this past Wednesday night as 138 home favorites. This followed a devastating 3-0 loss as 148 home favorites in Game 3. The total in this series has now stayed UNDER in the last two games. This was after both teams combined for a total of 14 goals in the first two games.
For the second time in this series Benoit Pouliot gave New York an early lead by scoring the first goal in Game 4 and Martin St. Louis finally made his presence known with the eventual game winning goal early in the second. The only reason that New York is still playing hockey this season was the play of Henrik Lundqvist in goal. He stopped 40 of the 41 shots he faced and the only way this series continues past Friday night will be if he can duplicate that performance again.

Los Angeles advanced to this year's Stanley Cup Finals by winning three road games when facing elimination. While the Kings came up short in their first attempt to close things out with a series lead, you have to believe that it is only a matter of time before they take possession of the Cup for the second time in three years. They dominated play on Wednesday night in every phase of the game except on the scoreboard.
This was the first time in the Kings' last 10 games where they failed to score at least three goals. Their roster is loaded with sharpshooters with a total of 11 players tallying at least four goals in the postseason. Marian Gaborik has led the way with 13 goals and Anze Kopitor leads the team in total points with 26 (5 goals and 21 assists). Despite all of this firepower, it appears that the goaltenders are starting to take this series over. Jonathan Quick only faced 19 shots in Game 4, but for the most part, he has made the saves when he had to all series long.
The Rangers are 9-4 in their last 13 games after scoring two or less goals in their previous outing and they are 8-2 in their last 10 games on a Friday. The total has stayed UNDER in 23 of their last 36 games following a win.
The Kings are 8-2 in their last 10 Friday games and they are 9-1 in their last 10 games against a team from the Metro Division. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last 10 games in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Head-to-head in this matchup, the home team is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last seven games. New York has lost four of its last five games against the Kings in Los Angeles.
Stanley Cup Final Game 5 Total Pick
It will be a tall task for the Rangers to take this series back to New York for a Game 6, but they do have a ton of momentum after a huge game by Lundqvist. I am going to ride both goalies again on Friday night in a game that once again stays UNDER the total.
