One of the most popular NFL preseason bets on the board at BetOnline is the OVER or UNDER on a team’s projected win total for the regular season. The betting odds have been recently updated for all 32 teams heading into this year’s NFL preseason.

If sports bettors had a reliable crystal ball, online sportsbooks like BetOnline would never release betting odds for an NFL team's projected win total for the upcoming regular season. In the absence of an actual peek into the future, I have still managed to find the best value in the betting odds for a play on the OVER as well as one for the UNDER when it comes to total wins.

Every season there are always a few teams that exceed expectations when it comes to projected wins. Last year, the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles jumped to 13-3 after going 7-9 the year before in Doug Pederson’s first season at the helm as head coach. The Los Angeles Rams were almost as impressive with a jump from four wins in 2016 to a record of 11-5 and an NFC West title. Over in the AFC, the Jacksonville Jaguars ended a run of nine seasons without a winning record to go 10-6 to win the AFC South.

There are a few teams on my radar to turn things around in 2018, including the New York Giants in the NFC East at a projected seven wins and the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South at a projected 6.5 wins. The team that is at the top of the list is the Oakland Raiders in the AFC West.

The Raiders are third on the list at +300 to win the division title behind the Los Angeles Chargers (+135) and the Kansas City Chiefs (+250). Their projected win total for 2018 is eight games with the betting line favoring the OVER at -130 odds. The betting odds for the UNDER are set at +110.

The combination of an innovative head coach and a quarterback that can play at a high level has been a proven recipe for success in this league. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have perfected this recipe in New England, and the more recent duo of Pederson and Carson Wentz in Philadelphia have already cooked up an NFL title in just their second season together.

The return of Jon Gruden to the NFL coaching ranks at his old team along with fifth-year quarterback Derek Carr could be the next duo to make some noise following last year’s disappointing 6-10 effort in Oakland.

Another thing you can always count on in the NFL is a few teams slipping backward from a successful run the previous season. The Raiders are a perfect example after winning 12 games in 2016.

Teams like the Eagles, Rams, and Jaguars are suspect for a backslide given last season's sudden success, but the team that I definitely see taking a step back from their projected wins would be the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North.

The Vikings’ projected wins for 2018 are set at 10 coming off last year’s 13-3 run to the NFC title game. The betting odds slightly favor the OVER at -115 with -105 odds for the UNDER. This team has a recent history of backslides starting in 2010 when it only won six games following a 12-4 record the season before. Minnesota went 10-6 in 2012 before cutting that total in half to five wins in 2013. It followed up an 11-5 record and 2015 NFC North title with an even 8-8 record the following year.

There is quite a bit of talent on both sides of the ball heading into this season, but a switch at quarterback to Kirk Cousins is a very bold move for a team that won 13 games with Case Keenum under center for most of the way.
