Arizona State was in the thick of the national playoff picture for much of the season with a straight-up 8-1 start, but those chances quickly unraveled with losses to Oregon State and Arizona in two of its final three games both SU and against the spread. The Sun Devils finished the season 9-3 SU with an even 6-6 record ATS. They went 4-4 ATS in eight games as favorites and the total went OVER in three of their last four games.
The Sun Devils finished in the nation's top 30 when it came to passing yards this season. Quarterbacks Taylor Kelly and Mike Bercovici combined for 3,319 passing yards and 32 touchdowns throws this season. DJ Foster anchored the running game with 1,002 yards and nine scores on 183 carries and the offense, as a whole, averaged 37 points a game. The Sun Devils did have their issues at times with a defense that allowed 27.7 points a game.
The Duke Blue Devils tended to rely a bit more heavily on a rushing attack that averaged 183.3 yards a game. Shaun Wilson and Shaquille Powell combined for 1,092 yards rushing and seven scores on a 179 carries, but the player to watch for Duke in this one could be wide receiver Jamison Crowder. He caught 78 balls this season for 942 yards and six scores to help the Blue Devils average 32.5 points a game this year.
This program's turnaround over the past few seasons has been dramatic to say the least. Duke is on the verge of a second-straight 10-win campaign at 9-3 SU on the year. It has gone 7-4-1 ATS with a 2-1 record ATS as an underdog this year. The total has gone OVER in seven of the 12 games.
The Sun Devils are 1-5 ATS in their last six bowl games and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games played in December. The total has gone OVER in five of their last six neutral-site games.
The Blue Devils are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games outside the conference and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six games against a team with a SU winning record.
This will be the first ever meeting between these two teams in recent memory.
Arizona State vs. Duke Point Spread Pick
You have to give a ton of credit to Duke head coach David Cutcliffe for making the Blue Devils a major factor in the ACC for something other than basketball, but the Blue Devils are in slightly above their heads in this one. The level of play in the Pac-12 far exceeds that of the ACC and that will become painfully obvious against the likes of Arizona State. Take the Sun Devils and lay the 7.5 points in this one.
