The Pac-12 is off to a crazy start to this season, and Arizona State and Stanford look to add to it when they meet Friday night in Tempe. The Cardinal already own victories over two Pac-12 contenders this season, while the Sun Devils own first place in the Pac-12 South.

Arizona State also owns only one win over its last seven meetings with Stanford, but it's favored here by double-digits. How are we playing this game with our free against the spread pick?

Stanford-Arizona State Betting Odds

This week's college football betting lines opened Arizona State as a 10-point favorite over Stanford, with an over/under of around 52. Early betting action then bumped the Sun Devils a point and a half to -11.5.

Stanford Betting Preview

The Cardinal are 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in Pac-12 play after upsetting Oregon at home last week 31-24 in overtime. Stanford scored the first 10 points of the game and led 17-7 at the half, then allowed the Ducks to score the first 17 points of the second half to fall down 24-17 midway through the fourth quarter. But the Cardinal tied the game with a touchdown on an un-timed down on the last play of regulation, then won it in OT with a TD and a defensive stop.

Stanford got out-gained by Oregon 414-354 and out-rushed 228-124 but converted the only takeaway of the game into a touchdown and caught a couple of late breaks (cough, cough, defensive holding in the end zone). Really, after basically dominating the first half of that game, the Cardinal probably should have lost.

Stanford opened this season with a bad loss to Kansas State but then beat USC outright as an 18-point underdog and beat Vanderbilt 41-23 to cover as a 13-point favorite. The Cardinal then lost at home to UCLA. So it’s a bit difficult to tell right now what you’re going to get from this Stanford team on any given Friday.

Arizona State Betting Preview

Meanwhile, the Sun Devils are 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in-conference after beating the Bruins at the Rose Bowl last week 42-23. Arizona State trailed that game 17-10 midway through the second quarter but scored two long touchdowns from scrimmage to lead 24-23 at the half. The Sun Devils then won the second half 18-0 to secure the outright victory as three-point underdogs.

ASU put the game away late in the third when, up by nine, they stuffed UCLA on a fourth down at the 2-yard line, then drove 98 yards to a touchdown.

Arizona State out-gained the Bruins 463-435 and held UCLA 16 points below its season average.

The Sun Devils opened this season with easy wins over FCS Southern Utah and UNLV, although they couldn't cover a couple of huge spreads. ASU then lost at BYU 27-17 even though they out-gained the Cougars by 65 yards. But the Sun Devils then bounced back to beat Colorado 35-13, covering as 14-point favorites.

At the moment, with USC already losing twice, we make Arizona State the favorite to win the Pac-12 South.

Cardinal vs. Sun Devils Prediction ATS10/8/21

These teams have played one common opponent so far this season; Arizona State beat UCLA 42-23 while Stanford lost to the Bruins 35-24. And total yardage basically reflected those scores. Also, we consider Stanford a candidate for a letdown this week, after upsetting Oregon last week, plus the Cardinal are a little banged up. We’re siding with the Sun Devils here, minus the points.
