Miami at Clemson Game Overview

Miami had a clear path to a spot in the College Football Playoff until it took its eyes off the road in last Friday’s shocking 24-14 loss to Pittsburgh as a 12-point road favorite. The total stayed UNDER 53 points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in nine of 11 games this season. At 10-1 straight-up, the Hurricanes are 5-6 against the spread after failing to cover in five of their last seven games.

Last week’s loss exposed a prevailing weakness in Miami’s inability to overpower teams with an offense that is 41st in the nation in passing yards and 65th when it comes to gaining yards on the ground. Against the 5-7 Panthers, this unit was held to 187 yards through the air behind quarterback Malik Rosier. The Hurricanes added just 45 yards on the ground in that game. They are going to have to step things up quickly to have any chance of keeping pace in this ACC title game.

The Tigers are still haunted by their bad loss to Syracuse in mid-October, but they have built up some serious momentum ever since with a SU five-game winning streak while going 3-1-1 ATS. They hammered in-state rival South Carolina 34-10 on Saturday as 13.5-point road favorites with the total staying UNDER 46.5 points. The total has now stayed UNDER in seven of 12 games this season. Clemson is 11-1 SU overall with a 7-4-1 record ATS.

Behind an offense that is averaging 35.2 points per game complementing a defense that is fourth in the nation in points allowed (13.6), all Clemson needs to do this Saturday night is play to its ability. This is one of the best balanced offenses in college football when it comes to passing and running the ball and junior quarterback Kelly Bryant has done a good job running the show all season long. This game could still come down to the Tigers’ ability to shutdown Miami on the other side of the ball.

Miami at Clemson ACC Championship Game Pick - Betting Odds

Miami has something to prove following that bad loss to Pitt and Clemson knows it needs a win to stay on the path for a second-straight national title. This makes the stakes in this game about as high as it gets for a conference championship. The only problem for the Hurricanes is that they could be up against an opponent they simply cannot beat. Clemson is the superior team across the board in this matchup and I am banking on the Tigers making short work of Miami on Saturday night to cover the nine-point spread.
